4 early warning signs and symptoms of esophageal cancer

Esophageal cancer is a serious disease that affects the esophagus, the tube carrying food from the throat to the stomach. It usually grows in silence-and the symptoms become pronounced when the cancer has reached an advanced stage. Awareness of early signs can facilitate early diagnosis and ultimately a more effective treatment outcome. Following are four major warning signs of esophageal cancer described naturally and clearly. (source: American Cancer Society)

2/6

Difficulty swallowing

The most common early sign of esophageal cancer is difficulty swallowing food or liquids. This symptom, called dysphagia, often starts with a feeling like food is sticking in the throat or chest. The person may notice that swallowing solid foods becomes difficult first and, as the cancer worsens, even liquids cause discomfort. This occurs due to the narrowing of the esophagus because of the tumor, which makes it difficult for the passage of food. Swallowing may become painful over time. If you find yourself avoiding certain foods or having difficulty in swallowing—this symptom should never be ignored and needs prompt medical evaluation, as early assessment can significantly improve outcomes and guide appropriate treatment.

3/6

Unexplained weight loss

Sudden or unconscious weight loss may be the other warning sign. Due to a tumor in the esophagus, the number of food intakes becomes sufficiently reduced. In addition, esophageal cancer may demand more metabolic needs, energy utilization from the body. Sometimes patients lose considerable weight without changes in either appetite or exercise. This excessive loss of weight serves as an early sign if a serious underlying condition exists-since it coincides with difficulties in swallowing or other symptoms. It is important to consult your doctor in case of unintended weight loss.

4/6

Persistent chest pain

With esophageal cancer, many patients report some kind of chest pain or discomfort. It might feel like burning, pressure, or sharp pain that may be exacerbated by eating or swallowing. While chest pain is common in conditions like heartburn or acid reflux, it becomes a cause for alarm if persistent or worsening. The esophagus is behind the breastbone; hence, tumors that arise here can give the perception of chest tightness or deep ache. Chest discomfort that persists and is not relieved by conventional measures should be investigated by a physician.

5/6

Hoarseness or chronic cough

Sometimes hoarseness of voice or-a persistent cough will have developed due to the tumor's affecting nerves around the voice box. This may result in an irritation to the throat that causes voice changes or damage to the nerves, thereby producing a hoarse or weak voice. Or it may cause a chronic cough that does not respond to standard cough treatments. Such symptoms may also occur in lung or throat conditions but, if associated with any of the above symptoms, including unexplained weight loss, should be reported. This would help an early medical evaluation to differentiate between benign causes and serious illnesses like esophageal cancer.

6/6

What to do if you notice these symptoms

If you have difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss, persistent chest pain, or hoarseness with a chronic cough-see your doctor as soon as possible. In that way, you could get an earlier diagnosis and be on the right treatment path. Physicians can diagnose it using specific tests-such as endoscopy, imaging, or biopsy, to determine whether esophageal cancer or another condition may be responsible.

Symptoms other than these four major signs include increased indigestion or heartburn, vomiting after eating, blood in vomit or stool, feeling tired-and sometimes pain in the throat or upper chest. While these can be caused by less serious issues, they should be checked by your health care provider if persistent or getting worse.
