5 natural supplements to help lower creatinine levels in the body, and support kidney health

Creatinine is a byproduct of muscle metabolism and under normal circumstances, the kidney's filter creatinine from the blood and pass it out of the body in the form of urine. If the kidney function starts to deteriorate, the creatinine starts to build up in the blood and can signal kidney disease or impairment. High levels of creatinine are usually treated by addressing the cause and altering diet and making certain lifestyle choices.
There are although, natural supplements that have been researched to support kidney function and lower the levels of creatinine. Here are five of those supplements that have indicated benefits, backed by scientific studies and clinical evidence.

2/14

What is creatinine?

Creatinine is a chemical waste product that is generated from creatine, a molecule stored in muscle tissue that is used for energy. As creatine is broken down during normal muscle metabolism, it produces creatinine, which is then filtered out of the blood by the kidneys and excreted in the urine. Because the production of creatinine is relatively constant and directly related to a person's muscle mass, measuring its level in the blood and urine is a key indicator used by doctors to assess kidney function.

Rehmannia

Rehmannia glutinosa, is an ancient herb that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for years and is known for its support in kidney function and adrenal function. It contains iridoid glycosides, and other constituents that are used to guard the kidney's against inflammation, toxin-induced damage. Rehmannia glutinosa ameliorates the progressive renal failure induced by 5/6 nephrectomy, a study published in PubMed, its results clearly state that Rehmannia glutinosa reduced the serum creatinine level, 24-h urinary protein excretion, and glomerulosclerosis. It is frequently incorporated in herbal regimens to maintain kidney wellness and decelerate disease progression. Its adaptogenic properties also help balance stress hormones, improve energy levels, and support overall endocrine system health for long-term vitality

Chitosan

Chitosan can significantly reduce the burden on the kidneys but binding with fats and waste products in the intestine. It is basically a crustacean shell fiber that is found naturally occurring. Numerous studies have established that supplementation with chitosan can result in lowered serum creatinine levels and has significantly enhanced the kidney and renal function, among CKD patients. It is also used for other purposes such as weight management, balancing cholesterol levels and providing an added health benefit for individuals with kidney issues. A study published in the Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology states that significant reductions in urea and creatinine levels in serum were observed after 4 weeks of chitosan ingestion in patients with chronic renal failure. It is a natural polysaccharide derived from the shells of crustaceans, such as:

Shrimp shells
Crab shells
Lobster shells

5/14

Quercetin

Quercetin is rich in flavonoids, mostly found in commonly consumed food items such as apples, berries, onions and leafy greens. Rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, quercetin can potentially prevent damage and oxidative stress in kidneys, which turns out, is a primary cause of CKD, chronic kidney disease. Quercetin supplementation has been demonstrated in animal models of kidney disease to decrease markers of inflammation and enhance renal function. While more human studies are necessary, quercetin is a supportive nutrient for patients with kidney issues. Also See: Can creatine help you sleep better? Science says it might

Nettle leaf tea

Urtica dioica, a long-standing natural treatment to assist with urinary infections and kidney function. Nettle leaf is a mild diuretic that assists in elimination of excess water and toxins from the body. Its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties support kidney function and nettle leaf is known to have a gentle effect on the kidneys and can significantly control the initial stages in kidney impairment. Individuals that suffer from kidney disease, however, should first consult a physician when using it on a regular basis. It may also support overall urinary tract health, reduce fluid retention, and contribute to improved metabolic balance when used as part of a healthy routine.

7/14

R-lipoic acid

R-lipoic acid is a more bioavailable version of alpha-lipoic acid, a strong antioxidant that aids in energy metabolism and cell protection. It was found to alleviate oxidative stress in the kidney's and enhance mitochondrial function. R-lipoic acid has been shown to defend against kidney damage due to diabetes, toxins, or inflammation in some studies. By maintaining cellular overall health, it could help improve kidney function and decrease creatinine levels in the long run.

Spinach
Broccoli
Brussels sprouts
Tomatoes

Putting it all together

These supplements are potent but a supplement can't work alone, in order to achieve optimal results. A diet is safe for the kidneys that means balanced protein, low phosphorus, managed potassium and sodium levels. Lifestyle changes that minimizes inflammation and toxin accumulation.

Regular hydration, stress management, adequate sleep, and avoiding processed foods further support kidney function and contribute to long-term overall health.
