5 superfoods that cleanse and detox the liver

Our liver functions as a filter system, that performs around 500 essential functions, including filtering toxins from the blood, producing bile for digestion, regulating blood sugar, and synthesising proteins. Even though our liver can detox and cleanse itself, what we eat also greatly impacts our liver. While we all know that alcohol harms our liver, do you know that there are some superfoods, that should be incorporated into your diet, since they help maintain a clean and healthy liver? Here are 5 such foods....

2/9

Garlic

Garlic serves as more than a flavor enhancer, when used in cooking. Sulfur compounds present in this food, activate liver enzymes which help remove toxins from the body. The sulfur content in garlic works together with selenium, to protect the liver through antioxidant actions.

The combination of these benefits, makes garlic an excellent choice for your liver, since it strengthens your immune response, while helping liver detoxification and reducing cholesterol levels.

The consumption of fresh raw garlic should be integrated into your meals through salads and soups as well as sauces, or used as a tadka to your regular sabzis as well. You can also consume it with water.

To obtain the best results with crushed or chopped garlic, you should let it sit for a few minutes prior to consumption.

3/9

Turmeric

Turmeric, or our good old haldi, is regularly used in our food. The compound curcumin present in turmeric, is recognised for its potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant characteristics. The liver uses curcumin to create bile, that helps remove toxins and break down fats from the body.

Turmeric provides excellent, and many benefits to the liver, by decreasing inflammation while also repairing damaged liver cells. The protective properties of this substance, defend the liver from developing fatty liver disease, and cirrhosis.

You can prepare golden milk (or "haldi doodh") by blending turmeric with warm milk and honey. When you consume turmeric, add a small amount of black pepper to enhance curcumin absorption in your body.

4/9

Leafy Greens

Leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale, along with collard greens contain high amounts of chlorophyll. Green pigment in leafy vegetables works as a toxin and are a heavy metal binder, which enables your body to eliminate them more efficiently. The chemical absorption capabilities of leafy greens, assist the liver in reducing its workload, thus preventing it from damage.

Leafy greens contain beneficial fiber, alongside vitamins and minerals which support both digestive health and liver function.

Add leafy greens to salads and smoothies and steam them or include them in soups and omelets for consumption.

To achieve the best results, eat various green vegetables daily as a mix.

5/9

Beets

Betalains and antioxidants found in beets, enable the liver to detoxify, by breaking down heavy metals and waste substances. The high fiber content of beets, enables proper digestion, and thus supports liver health.

Beets possess anti-inflammatory properties and deliver vitamin C, while defending liver cells from potential harm.

The sweet earthy flavor of beets can be obtained through raw salads, or roasted side dishes and smoothie blending. You can also juice beets.

If you are not used to the taste of beets, you should start with a tiny glass of beetroot juice, because its strong effects might be overwhelming at first.

6/9

Walnuts

The liver cleansing and detoxifying processes receive essential support from walnuts, because they contain healthy fats and amino acids along with antioxidants. The high content of arginine in walnuts, enables your body to remove dangerous substances and ammonia.

The combination of better liver circulation and vitamin E antioxidants, makes walnuts an effective health-promoting snack.

A serving of walnuts as a snack, or salad topping is a suitable way to incorporate them into your diet.

You should select raw walnuts that are free from salt to get the most health benefits.
