4 healthy habits for a long life; no diet or exercise involved

Secrets to live long and happy

When it comes to being healthy, you may always hear people talking about the importance of a healthy diet and a regular workout routine. While these are two important pillars of good health, there are other important factors too, that are fun as well.

These habits are inspired by the Blue Zones, the regions in the world where people live the longest, healthiest lives. These have been identified by National Geographic Fellow and acclaimed writer Dan Buettner.
2/7

Stay stress free

Chronic stress can lead to inflammation and various chronic illnesses. Therefore, to live a long and happy life, it is important to keep an eye on your stress levels. When we see the Blue Zones, most of them are removed from the past-paced metropolitan cities. While this need not necessarily imply that you start living on an island, is it nevertheless important to find ways to slow down and unwind on a regular basis.

3/7

Prioritize your social life

The sense of social connectedness is integral to the people living in the Blue Zones. A sense of belonging, having a supportive community and positive social networks can contribute to a longer life. Learn to prioritize your relationships, whether family or friends. Investing time in your loved ones can foster a sense of support and give you greater purpose. It will make you happy and give you a sense of fulfillment.

4/7

Enjoying a drink in the evening

While alcohol as an ingredient has no health benefits and excessive consumption can harm your health, enjoying a glass of wine before dinner with friends and family is another habit practiced in the Blue Zones. This does not mean you start drinking on a daily basis. The idea is to find a ritual that helps you to destress, unwind, relax and socialize.

5/7

Find what makes you happy

In the hustle and bustle of life, we often fill ourselves with stress or lead a life we ourselves find boring. It actually takes courage to choose joy and optimism in spite of hurdles. Adulting need not necessarily be filled with bills and responsibilities only. Invest in activities that bring joy and optimism in your life, and give you a sense of purpose as well as make you experience gratitude. This can have a positive impact on your physiological and psychological well-being.

6/7

Not laziness, but choice

While where you live plays an important role in your lifestyle and life choices, it does not mean that you have to quit your job and move to one of the Blue Zones to live a long life. The practices shared above are rather simple and all it would take is some discipline for you to make them a part of your daily habits. It may not be easy to follow these 'simple', life-changing practices. However, with some planning and good intentions towards your health and happiness, you too can achieve them.

7/7

Start slow

Habits are difficult to build and break. However, if you are conscious that your lifestyle and daily habits are not quite healthy, it is in your hands to change them. Now, instead of making the perfect and ideal time table for tomorrow, that even a part of you knows you will not be able to achieve, it is practical to start small and start slow. Instead of getting carried away with a sudden awakening that might die down by the next morning, plan just one tiny lifestyle change at a time and focus on achieving that.

No, No, No. Having alcohol in any quantity or frequency is harmful for health. Every study where alcohol has been shown to have some positives for health comes with the disclaimer that benefits don't mean that teetotalers should start having alcohol. It means the reported benefits far outweigh the known disadvantages or harmful effects. I'm writing this as a doctor.
