Every year 10 million new cases of dementia are being reported: WHO

The global burden of dementia is increasing fast. As per the data by the World Health Organisation (WHO) currently there are 55 million people with dementia and every year 10 million new cases are added.

It is currently the seventh leading cause of death.

Dementia can be handled well if the symptoms are identified at an early stage.

Here we discuss the silent signs which give a hint of the onset of this disease.

2/7

Finding difficulty in remembering something

This is one of the initial signs of the disease, where the person is unable to remember common things. In its initial stage this condition is ignored but gradually it grows and affects the overall memory of the individual.

Forgetting things or recent events, not remembering where things have been kept, unable to recall one's own lane or a friend's house are some of the signs of dementia which should not be ignored.

3/7

Mood swings

Another typical sign of dementia is feeling sad and angry very often without any valid reason. Due to the effect of cognitive degeneration the person is unable to have control over the moods.

Getting anxious, panicky, sad and frustrated comes to these people with minimum trigger or sometimes without any trigger.

4/7

Inappropriate behavior

Showing behavior which is not acceptable in the social circle is another sign of dementia. If a person suddenly loses calm in public or starts abusing others, it should not be dismissed.

Showing inappropriate behavior is another sign of dementia which is misunderstood and it worsens over time.

5/7

Having difficulty in planning

With growing age one's ability to handle and manage big tasks gets easier. But with the onset of dementia one tends to slow down here.

Inability to participate in planning, reluctance in participation, confusion while planning and organising certain things is an indication of cognitive health decline.

6/7

Social withdrawal

Withdrawal from social activities and interactions is another indication of the onset of dementia.

While some people actually find it difficult to interact with others, in other cases it begins with cognitive decline.

If a person who was socially active earlier, begins to remain away from social circle one should pay attention.

7/7

Other signs to take note of

Other common signs related to dementia are misjudging distances to objects visually, being less interested in other people’s emotions, changes in personality, misplacing things, difficulty in solving problems, getting slower physically, getting irritated a lot.

As an individual you need to understand these signs and take help from the doctor. If you are someone closely related to the affected individual, take care of them, help them understand that this is treatable.

People with dementia need love and care.
