Indian summers are no joke



With temperatures soaring past 40°C in many cities, stepping out feels like walking into a giant oven. Hydration doesn’t only mean chugging 8 glasses of water every day (though that helps too!). It also means eating smart—especially when the weather is out to roast you.

Here are 5 water-rich foods that can help you stay cool and hydrated this summer—desi style!

Cucumber



Let’s start with the classics. Cucumber is 96% water—yes, that much! No wonder it’s a summer staple in Indian kitchens.

You’ll find it in every salad plate, tiffin dabba, and roadside chaat corner. And for good reason. Cucumber doesn’t just hydrate—it also cools down your body temperature, flushes out toxins, and aids digestion.

How to enjoy it: Chop it up with salt, pepper, lemon juice, and a pinch of chaat masala. Add thin cucumber slices to your raita or curd rice. Make refreshing cucumber-mint detox water at home. Cucumber is also super low in calories, making it a great snack if you’re trying to shed a few summer kilos.
Keep slices of cucumber in the fridge and apply them to your eyes in the evening. Bye-bye heat-induced puffiness!

Watermelon



If summer had a mascot, it would 100% be watermelon. It’s juicy, sweet, and made up of about 92% water. And nothing feels more satisfying than biting into a cold slice of watermelon when it’s 42°C outside. Watermelon also packs in some serious benefits. It’s rich in electrolytes, antioxidants like lycopene, and even vitamin A and C. So it not only hydrates but also protects your skin and helps your body fight off heat stress.
How to enjoy it: Cut into cubes and chill in the fridge—your guilt-free dessert! Blend into juice with a touch of mint and black salt (you don’t even need sugar). Mix with feta or paneer and some lemon zest for a desi version of a watermelon salad.

Musk melon, or kharbuja, often gets overshadowed by watermelon—but it deserves some love too! Lauki
