​Foods for healthy lungs

With very poor air quality in several cities and towns in India, there has been increasing health problems related to skin, eyes as well as respiratory issues.

Air pollution can irritate your airways, making you feel breathless, or exhibit other symptoms like cold and cough. People with previous lung conditions can feel worsening of their symptoms, such as having an asthma attack or a Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) flare-up.

There are several measures you can take from your end to prevent or minimise impact of air pollution on your lungs. One such is eating foods which are beneficial for good lung health.

​Turmeric

Turmeric is known for its healing properties. It is rich in antioxidants and high in anti-inflammatory properties. Turmeric is regularly used in Indian households, added in small quantities in sabzis and milk. Turmeric’s component curcumin helps in cleaning your respiratory tract and boosting the immune system to fight against viral infections.

​Flaxseed

Flaxseeds are healthy for your lungs as well as your heart. These are rich in phytoestrogens and Omega-3 fatty acids, which can help in fighting against allergic reactions, such as those caused by pollution. These can be roasted and eaten directly, or added to recipes like oatmeal, smoothie bowls, salads, etc.

​Tulsi

This superfood can help relieve your air-pollution related symptoms. You can boil them in water and sip the lukewarm concoction, or add these in your daily tea. According to health experts, regular consumption of tulsi juice, (consult your doctor for dosage) can help remove pollutants from your respiratory tract.

Keeping a tulsi plant at your house is also beneficial as the plant generates lots of oxygen and also absorbs harmful gases like carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide.

​Amla

Another powerful antioxidant, rich in vitamin C, amla should be a part of your daily diet. It boosts your immunity to fight off infections. When choosing amlas, experts recommend to opt for the ripe and golden ones as they are more nutritious, compared to the raw, green amlas.

​Green leafy vegetables

With the onset of, green leafy vegetables like spinach are back in season. This makes it an excellent time to eat saag and palak-paneer or green juice, as spinach, along with other green-leafy veggies, is rich in antioxidants. This can help improve lung inflammation. These foods combat free radicals in the body, excess of which can be harmful for your health.
