Connection between your diet and anxiety

It is ok to feel stressed or anxious every now and then, especially under difficult circumstances. However, constantly stressing can become chronic, and affect your mental health and well-being.

It is important to watch your anxiety levels, especially if you are prone to worry more by nature or work and/or live in a stressful environment.

There are many relaxing activities that can reduce your levels of stress and anxiety. Apart from these, paying attention to your diet can also help a lot. Foods you eat can reduce or exacerbate your anxiety. This is because of the gut-brain connection, due to which the health of one directly influences the health of the other. Here are some foods you should avoid to keep your anxiety away too.

2/6

Coffee

Coffee and caffeine do not cause anxiety. However, some people’s anxiety symptoms can worsen after drinking coffee. If you suspect coffee is worsening your anxiety, pay attention to your stress levels after drinking coffee.

3/6

Industrial oils

Inexpensive and processed oils are widely available for consumption. These oils are typically created from the byproduct of crops such as corn, grapeseed, soybean, sunflower, and palm fruit. Due to processing, these oils are high in omega-6 fatty acids and are devoid of the healthy omega-3s.

Excess omega-6 fatty acids can lead to an excess of inflammatory molecules throughout the body, especially in the gut and brain. Reducing consumption of such oils may help in reducing your anxiety. choose healthier alternatives like extra-virgin olive oil.

Processed foods

Packaged foods with lengthy and complicated ingredient lists are typically full of processed additives. When consumed in excess, these can feed the bad microbes in your gut and worsen your inflammation and, ultimately, stress. They are also devoid of any beneficial vitamins, minerals, and fiber.

5/6

Added & refined sugars

Sneaky sugars are found in food items like cakes, pastries, cookies, boxed cereals, granola bars, ketchup, salad dressings, and pasta sauces. Overconsumption of these sugary foods can negatively impact your gut health, increase inflammation, promote anxiety, and worsens mood.
