Brain health benefits of groundnut oil

Groundnut oil, might just be doing more than adding flavour to food. According to Dr Arun L Naik, a neurosurgeon from AIIMS New Delhi, this oil holds brain-boosting secrets that are mostly missed by us. Rich in essential nutrients and antioxidants, groundnut oil can contribute significantly to maintaining and even improving cognitive function. But what exactly makes it so special for the brain?
Here are 5 facts that reveal the truth behind the brain-boosting powers of groundnut oil.

Brain cells love the fats in Groundnut oil

Monounsaturated fats found in cold-pressed groundnut oil are actually vital for brain health.

These fats strengthen the cell membranes in the brain, keeping them flexible and efficient at transmitting signals. Dr Naik points out that maintaining brain cell integrity is essential for focus, clarity, and long-term memory. Unlike saturated fats or trans fats that clog the system, these healthy fats keep the brain ‘well-oiled.’

“It’s like greasing the gears in a machine. Without the right fats, neurons slow down,” he explains.

3/6

Vitamin e

Groundnut oil is naturally high in Vitamin E, an antioxidant that neutralises free radicals, which are harmful compounds that speed up brain ageing. According to research published in the Journal of Neurology, higher levels of Vitamin E are linked to slower cognitive decline in older adults. Dr Naik affirms that Vitamin E from dietary sources (like groundnut oil) is far more effective than from supplements.

“The body knows how to use nutrients from food better than from pills,” he says.

A secret dose of niacin to support memory and alertness

Groundnut oil contains a modest but meaningful amount of niacin, which improves cerebral blood flow and supports the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin. Studies from suggest niacin may lower the risk of neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s. Dr Naik highlights that even a small inclusion of groundnut oil in daily meals can contribute to long-term brain nourishment.

“It’s not about large quantities, but regular intake in balanced amounts,” he advises.

How Groundnut Oil complements brain repair

Dr Naik encourages pairing cold-pressed groundnut oil with protein-rich ingredients like dals, sprouts, or even crushed peanuts. Together, they provide the essential amino acids that assist in neurotransmitter production and neural repair. A diet that balances good fats with plant protein has shown better brain resilience, especially in growing children and older adults.

“What’s on the plate matters more than what’s in a bottle,” he says with a smile.

6/6

Resveratrol

This polyphenol has been shown to enhance cerebral circulation and reduce inflammation in the brain. A study noted that resveratrol could help slow down cognitive ageing and improve verbal memory. Dr Naik confirms that while the levels in groundnut oil aren’t as high as in wine, daily inclusion still builds a cumulative effect over time.

“It’s like adding small coins to a jar; eventually, it turns into something valuable,” he explains.
