Ways eating too much protein can sabotage your weight loss journey

Resorting to a high-protein diet is said to be one of the most efficient ways to lose weight. Given that protein is an essential nutrient, it helps build muscles, strengthen bones and increase satiety, which keeps you fuller for a longer period of time. Often, people switch from carbs and fats to protein-rich foods for the simple reason that it is more effective and weight-loss friendly.

But as we all know, every coin has two sides, a high-protein diet is not as effective as it seems and may backfire at times. So while you may be high on protein, there are certain things you must not neglect. Let us first understand how a high-protein diet actually works?

2/6

How does a high-protein diet work?

Besides carbs and fat, protein is also a macronutrient. It is made up of chemical components known as amino acids, which are important for muscle development and strength.

When it comes to losing weight, eating a high-protein diet helps prevent overeating. Given that protein-rich foods boosts metabolism, reduces appetite and influences several weight-regulating hormones, it is said to work wonders for weight loss. Foods such as eggs, dairy, meat, fish, poultry, beans, legumes and more are some of the best protein you can have.

However, it may mean replacing carb and fat-rich foods, which are also part of the macronutrients. While it is believed to help you lose weight, there's also a possibility that excess protein intake is secretly making you gain weight. Here's how.

3/6

Low intake of carbs can lead to unhealthy cravings

Every nutrient is vital for our body. However, considering a high-protein diet may cut down carb intake, it can lead to worse outcomes. Since glucose, which is derived from carbs, is believed to be a preferred source of energy for our body, once you deprive your body of carbs, you're more likely to crave for unhealthy foods including sugar and starch. This can in turn make you binge eat on high-calorie food, sabotaging your weight loss goals.

4/6

Complex carbs are rich in fiber, you may lack this vital nutrient

Healthy, complex carbs are a good source of fiber. Fiber is an essential nutrient that helps keep your digestive health in order and also keeps you fuller for a longer time, reducing your appetite for unhealthy foods.

Being on a high-protein diet deprives your body or necessary carbs. When you eat more proteins, your gut bacteria does not feed, leading to gastrointestinal issues. That said, if you want to lose weight, you must ensure that your digestive health also thrives.

5/6

Eating excess protein-rich food means higher calories

If you want to lose weight, counting calories is extremely important. That said, what you must keep in mind is that protein-rich foods also means high-caloric foods. While animal-based protein may be satiating and even delicious, it is not devoid of high calorie content. The excess calories that you take in while sticking to a high-protein diet, may accumulate in your body as fats, leading to weight gain rather than weight loss.

6/6

You may lack the energy to workout

It is believed that carbs are the best fuel for energy, especially when you're a fitness freak. Replacing them wholly with proteins only makes you less energetic and may even lead to lethargy. Since working out regularly is key for weight loss, having no energy to workout will only make things worse over time.

It is therefore important to lead a balanced life. Excess of anything can be harmful and one must pay special attention to their diet, fitness and calorie count for weight loss.
