What is the difference between fast walking vs. slow jogging?

Indulging in cardio exercise can work wonders for your weight loss journey. It not only helps burn maximum calories, but also boosts your cardiovascular health.

However, when it comes to choosing the right workout regime for you, it can be a tough call. Depending on how much impact you can bear or how intense you like your sessions, you can decide on what works best for your body.

In this article, we will discuss the difference between fast walking and slow jogging, both of which are aerobic activities, but are different in terms of intensity.

What is fast walking?

Fast walking or speed walking is when you walk at a brisk pace. During this type of walking your heart rate goes up, you burn more calories than when you just walk slowly or go on a stroll. Fast walking therefore usually consists of about 100 steps per minute. It can go up to 130 steps per minute, whereas if it reaches 140 steps/minute, it is more of jogging than walking.

3/6

What is slow jogging?

Slow jogging is somewhat like taking a walk, but it is at an increased intensity, where you can atleast have a conversation. It is considered to be an excellent alternative to running, where it's like jogging at a walking pace. Usually, slow jogging comprises about 45-50 steps in 15 seconds. It not only establishes efficiency, but also improves respiratory, cardio, and muscular functions.

4/6

Benefits of fast walking vs. slow jogging

As compared to slow jogging, fast walking will not burn as many calories, but it can still aid you in your weight loss journey. It is a low impact exercise, which is why not only does it reduce your risk of injury, but it is one of the best cardio workouts for those with joint pain and pre-existing injury.

Slow jogging on the other hand is more effective for weight loss. Since it burns more calories, you can expect faster results. Other than that, you can reap all other benefits associated with cardiovascular exercise such as better immunity, better heart health and more.

5/6

Who should resort to slow jogging?

People who are in shape and have a high fitness level can resort to slow jogging as it has a higher impact than walking or fast walking to be precise. Athletes for instance or those who exercise regularly can take up slow jogging.

6/6

Fast walking reduces risk of injury

Fast walking is best for people who have issues with their joints, have muscle tear and injuries, are older and those who are beginners to the fitness world. This is because fast walking is low-impact and poses a low risk of injury.
