5 early symptoms of Gallbladder Cancer that are easy to ignore

Gallbladder cancer is a rare, but often aggressive cancer that starts in the gallbladder, which is a small organ beneath the liver that stores bile. Unfortunately, it is usually diagnosed only at later stages, which makes treatment difficult, resulting in a poor prognosis. The symptoms can be generic, and mimic other conditions, leading to delayed diagnosis. Knowing these early symptoms can help you spot a problem sooner and get medical help quickly. Here are 5 early symptoms of Gallbladder Cancer that are easy to ignore

2/6

Mild pain or discomfort in the upper right belly

The first sign of a gallbladder cancer, may present as mild abdominal pain or weight sensation, that occurs on the right side just below the ribs. Several patients experience this discomfort as a "dragging feeling" instead of acute pain. The discomfort tends to appear and disappear, and might lead people to believe it is either indigestion or gas or gallstones. Any kind of persistent or unusual pain in this area should not be dismissed, because it is located near the liver and gallbladder.

3/6

Nausea or feeling sick

Nausea often occurs during the initial stages of gallbladder cancer, after eating meals despite small portions of food. The prevalence of nausea in various digestive conditions makes it common for people to overlook this symptom. A doctor needs to be consulted when nausea persists or worsens beyond a few weeks, and without any known cause, such as pregnancy, stomach distress, etc. However, please note that nausea can also be caused by many other factors, and is not always a symptom of gallbladder cancer.

4/6

Unexplained weight loss or loss of appetite

People with early gallbladder cancer, often experience eating less without any apparent reason, and undergo unexpected weight loss. This symptom develops gradually, yet serves as an important warning because cancer disrupts both energy utilisation and nutrient absorption in the body. When you unintentionally lose weight or experience persistent loss of appetite for an extended period, consult your doctor.

5/6

Early jaundice

The bile duct obstruction in gallbladder cancer, results in bile accumulation throughout the bloodstream. Yellow discoloration appears on the skin and eye whites due to jaundice. The initial yellow discoloration in early stages appears light, and difficult to detect especially when skin has darker tones. The initial signs of bile accumulation include itching alongside dark urine and pale-colored stools. Even if these are mild, they should be checked promptly. If not cancer, jaundice is fully treatable if caught early, and does not cause long-term damage.

6/6

Fatigue or weakness

The appearance of unexplained persistent fatigue, together with weakness could indicate various medical issues or possibly signal the presence of gallbladder cancer. The tiredness experienced here exceeds typical fatigue, because it persists while becoming more severe with time. People tend to dismiss this symptom because it mimics common health issues, while attributing it to stress or sleep deprivation. A doctor should be consulted immediately if fatigue appears with abdominal pain or nausea.
