5 health issues that can occur due to Vitamin D deficiency

Vitamin D, known as the sunshine vitamin, is extremely crucial for our body, as it helps in keeping our bones strong, muscles healthy, and the immune system working strong. Despite being a largely tropical country, 1 in 4 Indians are deficient in Vitamin D due to limited sun exposure, too much air conditioning and poor diets. While a blood test can confirm a vitamin D deficiency, there are also other signs your body gives when your vitamin D is low. Not only that, Vitamin D deficiency can cause a host of health issues, here are 5 of them...

2/8

Weakened bones/pain

Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium and phosphorus, which are important to build strong bones. Without enough vitamin D, your body cannot absorb these minerals properly. This can lead to soft, weak bones that are more likely to break or hurt.

In children, severe vitamin D deficiency causes a condition called rickets, which though rare, causes the bones to become soft and often leading to bowed legs. In adults, this condition is called osteomalacia, which causes bone pain and muscle weakness. People with low vitamin D may also develop osteoporosis, a disease where bones become fragile and brittle, increasing the risk of fractures.

3/8

Muscle Weakness and Pain

Vitamin D deficiency can cause muscle weakness, cramps, and pain. This happens because vitamin D is important for muscle function. When levels are low, muscles may feel tired or achy, and it becomes harder to move, or carry on with daily movements.

Older adults with severe deficiency are more likely to have muscle weakness near the hips and thighs, which can lead to problems walking or even increase the risk of falls. Muscle twitches, spasms, and a tingling sensation in the hands or feet can also occur.

4/8

Fatigue and Tiredness

Feeling constantly tired, and worn out is a very common symptom of vitamin D deficiency. Research shows that people with low vitamin D levels often experience chronic fatigue, even if they get enough sleep. Vitamin D plays a role in many body processes, including energy production. When it is low, the body’s ability to produce energy decreases, leading to feelings of exhaustion and weakness. This fatigue can affect daily life, making it hard to concentrate, work, or enjoy activities.

5/8

Lowered immunity

Vitamin D is important for a strong immune system. It helps the body fight off infections like colds, flu, and other respiratory illnesses. When vitamin D levels are low, the immune system does not work as well, making you more likely to get sick frequently.

Studies have shown that people with vitamin D deficiency have a higher risk of respiratory infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia. Vitamin D may also play a role in reducing the severity of viral infections like COVID-19.

6/8

Mood Changes and Depression

Vitamin D affects brain health and mood regulation. Low levels of vitamin D have been linked to mood disorders such as depression and anxiety. People with vitamin D deficiency may feel sad, anxious, or have trouble sleeping.

Some studies suggest that taking vitamin D supplements can help improve mood and reduce symptoms of depression, especially in older adults or those with very low vitamin D levels.

7/8

Get some sun

Try to get atleast 15-20 minutes of sunlight in a day, and also add vitamin D rich food to your diet.
