5 morning habits that can spike your blood pressure without you knowing

Simple morning habits that can trigger high blood pressure

High blood pressure (also called hypertension) often happens silently— and surprisingly, some simple morning habits can drastically make it worse. It is often said that how we start our day and the morning habits we follow can make or break our day, and rightly so.
Mornings are meant to energise and set a positive tone for the day, but certain habits and routines can lead to sudden spikes in our blood pressure without us even realising it. Over time, these habits can trigger stress hormones, constrict blood vessels, and even strain the heart. So, here we list some morning habits that can spike the blood pressure-- avoid them for a healthier life:

2/6

Checking your phone right after waking up

While this might seem like a harmless habit most people have, checking your phone first thing in the morning can adversely affect your blood pressure levels! Scrolling through messages, emails, or social media can instantly activate your body’s stress response. In return, the flood of cortisol and adrenaline increases the heart rate and narrows blood vessels— thus causing temporary spikes in blood pressure. Over time, this “digital stress” in the morning can lead to consistently high blood pressure levels.
A 2024 study titled 'Associations of screen time with symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression in adolescents' found that those who had a screen time of more than 4 hours daily had more symptoms of anxiety, stress, and depression. This indicated raised sympathetic nervous activity in response to screen exposure.
So, instead of checking your phone right after waking up, spend the first 10-20 minutes of the morning stretching, drinking 1-2 glasses of water, and meditating to start your day on a calm note.

3/6

Skipping breakfast

While it may seem harmless, skipping breakfast can have adverse effects. It can force your body to release more stress hormones like cortisol, which in turn can constrict arteries and increase blood pressure levels. A 2019 study titled 'Skipping Breakfast and the Risk of Cardiovascular Disease and Death' found that people who skipped breakfast were 21% more likely to develop cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension.
On the contrary, having breakfast helps balance one's blood sugar levels. This prevents any morning spikes in their stress hormones.

So, avoid skipping your breakfast. Instead, include whole grains, fruits, and protein in your breakfast daily.

4/6

Drinking too much coffee on an empty stomach

While caffeine increases your energy levels and makes you feel alert and active, having too much of it in the morning— especially on an empty stomach— can lead to short-term rise in your blood pressure level. This happens as caffeine stimulates the nervous system. A 2016 research titled 'Coffee—Antihypertensive Drug Interaction' from the American Journal of Hypertension shows that having about 127 mg of caffeine (which is equivalent to 1 or 2 cups of coffee) before food can raise systolic pressure by 8–10 mm Hg.
Instead, start your day by having 1-2 glasses of plain water on an empty stomach. Also, limit yourself to one cup of coffee or tea after breakfast.

5/6

Rushing and getting late in the morning

Running late for work or skipping your morning routine can cause anxiety and raise blood pressure levels, though temporarily. Stress hormones like adrenaline can cause your heart to beat faster and your arteries to tighten. When this happens regularly, chronic morning stress can lead to hypertension, as found in a Harvard Health review (2021).
To avoid this, start waking up 15 minutes earlier than your normal time. Also, plan your outfit and meals the night before-- this will save you from decision fatigue in the morning, and also save your time.

6/6

Eating salty or processed foods for breakfast

Do you often choose a quick ready--made sandwich, instant noodles or instant oats for breakfast while rushing for work? While it might seem convenient, processed foods are often loaded with sodium and having them regularly can secretly increase your blood pressure levels. How? High sodium intake causes the body to retain water, increasing blood volume and pressure. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends limiting sodium intake to less than 2 grams per day, yet many breakfast foods far exceed this.
So, opt for healthier, home-cooked breakfasts over processed and instant foods. Choose fresh fruits, eggs, overnight soaked chia seeds and oats, poha, upma, or unsalted nuts instead for breakfast which are better than processed and instant foods.
