5 signs of Cancer in children that require immediate attention

Cancer in children is rare, but can be serious, and even terminal. Parents and doctors need to identify early warning signs of childhood cancer, because detection at an early stage leads to better treatment outcomes. Children's cancer symptoms often present with typical illness or injury characteristics, so parents should monitor for any unusual or persistent signs that do not resolve. Here are 5 signs that could signal childhood cancer, even though only a doctor can confirm the same...

2/6

Unusual lumps or swelling

Childhood cancer often presents with unusual growths or swellings that develop in any body region. The body areas where these growths occur include the neck, chest, underarm regions and the abdominal area. The growths are typically painless, but they present as firm or hard to the touch. The body's internal swelling produces a bigger tummy appearance, and a feeling of fullness. The growths or swellings persist without resolution, while they continue to expand in size. Parents should immediately schedule a doctor's appointment when their child develops an unexplained new lump that persists or when they notice unexplained swelling in any body area.

3/6

Persistent pain in bones, joints, or back

Children with cancer experience unexplained chronic pain that persists longer than typical periods of discomfort. The medical condition of leukemia and bone tumors in children can manifest through bone and joint and back pain. The child experiences ongoing pain that intensifies during nighttime hours, while also developing a limp or showing reluctance to use their affected limb. Cancer cells that invade bone tissue or surrounding areas, produce this type of pain. Medical help needs immediate attention when a child shows ongoing or intensifying pain in their bones, joints or back that restricts their normal movement.

4/6

Unexplained weight loss and fatigue

A child who loses weight unintentionally while experiencing persistent exhaustion, might have cancer. Children with cancer develop pale skin and experience weakness even though they get enough rest and sleep. This occurs because the body's production of healthy blood cells and its ability to fight infections becomes impaired, when cancer develops which results in fatigue. The exhaustion differs from typical fatigue because it disrupts regular activities, schoolwork and playtime. Parents need to monitor their child's weight changes and persistent fatigue, that does not improve because these symptoms require medical evaluation.

5/6

Frequent fever and infections

Children with cancer, experience recurring infections and prolonged fevers that do not respond to standard treatment approaches. The immune system becomes weakened by cancer, which reduces the body's capacity to fight off germs. The combination of recurring infections such as colds, ear infections and skin infections with other symptoms requires medical attention. Children who experience night sweats together with unexplained high body temperatures, should seek medical evaluation. Medical evaluation becomes necessary when a child experiences prolonged fever without identifiable causes, or when they experience recurring infections, because these symptoms could indicate cancer, or other serious health issues.

6/6

Changes in vision or severe headaches

Children who develop persistent vision problems or unrelenting headaches, might have brain tumors. The headaches reach severe levels during mornings, while nausea and vomiting frequently accompany them. The neurological symptoms of this condition include dizziness, balance issues, seizures and unexpected muscle weakness. A white glow or unusual reflection in the eye which appears in photographs, can be a sign of retinoblastoma eye cancer. Children who experience ongoing headaches together with vision problems or seizures, need to receive immediate medical attention for proper diagnosis.
