5 signs of vitamin E deficiency you shouldn’t ignore

Vitamin E and its role for human body

Let us be honest- our bodies are under constant threat now more than ever. From pollution in the air we breathe, to ultraviolet rays, to the processed food we all love to eat without a second thought, our bodies are unable to catch a break. These environmental stressors generate free radicals, or the unstable molecules that are largely responsible for a range of health issues, including damaging our cells, accelerating aging, causing inflammation, and contributing to chronic diseases.

And this is where vitamin E enters, the key to pretty much all the above-mentioned issues. Best known for its antioxidant role in neutralizing harmful free radicals(unstable molecules), vitamin E is an essential fat-soluble vitamin. It protects our cells from oxidative stress.

And thus, despite its importance, people often tend to overlook the signs when their bodies are running low on this vital nutrient. But we must try to understand what our bodies are telling us before it is too late. Let us understand the vitamin and what its deficiency looks like in earlier stages-

2/8

Recognizing signs

Frankly, a vitamin E deficiency is quite rare in healthy individuals as it is widely available in foods. However, even a slight deficiency(due to fat malabsorption disorders or very low-fat diets) can cause subtle symptoms.

3/8

Numbness or tingling

One of the earliest signs of vitamin E deficiency is a sensation of numbness or tingling, especially in the hands and feet. This happens because vitamin E protects nerve cells from oxidative damage. Without enough of it, the myelin sheath that insulates nerves can degrade over time, leading to abnormal nerve signaling.

4/8

Muscle weakness

Inadequate levels of vitamin E may lead to gradual muscle weakness or fatigue. This can make routine physical activities, such as climbing stairs, lifting objects, or even standing for extended periods, more difficult.

5/8

Poor coordination (Ataxia)

Ataxia, or poor coordination, is one of the most obvious neurological signs of vitamin E deficiency. It refers to difficulty maintaining balance, awkward gait, or stumbling when walking. This happens because vitamin E is important for the health of the cerebellum and peripheral nerves, both of which help regulate movement and balance. Individuals may appear clumsy, drop objects often, or have trouble judging distances.

6/8

Vision problems

Vitamin E protects photoreceptor cells in the retina from oxidative damage. When levels drop too low, these cells may begin to deteriorate, leading to problems like blurred vision or difficulty seeing in low light (night blindness). Over time, this may result in reduced visual acuity or peripheral vision loss. In patients with malabsorption disorders or premature infants, vision problems may be an early warning sign.

7/8

Weakened reflexes

Slow reflexes are another telltale sign of vitamin E deficiency. These changes are often subtle at first but may become more noticeable as the deficiency progresses.

8/8

What is the recommended daily intake?

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of Dietary Supplements recommends a daily intake of 15 mg of alpha‑tocopherol per day for adult men and women above the age of 14- which is about 22 IU of vitamin E(natural form). However, for pregnant and lactating women, the recommended intake is slightly higher, 15–19 mg/day.
