What supplements should people with high blood pressure avoid


High blood pressure, or hypertension, is generally called a “silent killer” because it quietly damages the heart and arteries without showing obvious warning signs. While salt, stress, and lifestyle habits usually get all the blame, there’s another sneaky culprit: certain dietary supplements.
Many people take herbal or “natural” supplements, assuming they are always safe. But in reality, some of them can raise blood pressure, make hypertension medicines less effective, or put extra stress on the heart. Here are 5 such supplements that people should be cautious about.

Ephedra (Ma Huang)


As mentioned on Science Direct, Ephedra, once popular in weight-loss and energy-boosting products, contains compounds that act like strong stimulants. They constrict blood vessels, push the heart to work harder, and cause a sharp rise in blood pressure.
Even though it has been banned in many countries, including the US, ephedra-based blends can still be found online or in imported “herbal energy” mixes. In India, some Ayurvedic-style formulations may still include its extract under different names. For someone with hypertension, this can be as risky as running uphill with a heavy backpack, the heart simply has to push too hard.

Bitter orange

Bitter orange (often marketed for weight loss or “metabolism boost”) contains synephrine, a stimulant similar to ephedra. This compound as mentioned in the study "Blood pressure and heart rate effects following a single dose of bitter orange," narrows blood vessels and can accelerate heart rate, both of which raise blood pressure.


When combined with caffeine, which is often the case in fat-burner supplements, the effect becomes even stronger. Some cases of heart attack and stroke have been linked to its use. It’s like adding an extra lane of traffic to an already congested road, the pressure only builds up.

Licorice root

In traditional remedies and even candies, licorice root might seem harmless. But, as mentioned in a study published in NIH, it contains glycyrrhizic acid, which tricks the body into holding onto sodium while losing potassium. More sodium means more water retention, which pushes blood pressure upward.


Even moderate amounts, when consumed regularly through teas, powders, or herbal capsules, can cause noticeable blood pressure spikes. In simple terms, it’s like slowly turning up the volume on a radio until the static gets unbearable.

Yohimbine

Yohimbine is often marketed for male sexual health and athletic performance. But, as mentioned in a study " Effects of yohimbine on human sympathetic nervous system function," its stimulating effect on the nervous system can send blood pressure and heart rate soaring.

It works by blocking certain receptors that normally help blood vessels relax. The result is tighter vessels and a faster heartbeat, the exact opposite of what a person with high blood pressure needs. It’s a bit like stepping on the accelerator when the brakes are already weak.

Caffeine-packed supplements

Caffeine is well known for its temporary boost in alertness, but in supplement form, whether from guarana, green tea extract, or concentrated powders, it can push blood pressure higher.

For those already on hypertension medication, the spike may be small but still significant enough to undo the benefits of treatment. Some energy powders or gym pre-workouts in India contain caffeine levels equal to several cups of coffee, all consumed in one shot. That’s like suddenly switching a calm river into a rapid current.
