5 symptoms of colon cancer that should not be ignored

Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally. This cancer often develops silently, with symptoms emerging only in later stages. Early detection can significantly improve treatment outcomes, and hence it is critical to recognize the warning signs. Before we dive into the symptoms, let’s take a look at what colon cancer is.

2/18

What is colon cancer

Colon cancer is an uncontrolled growth of cells that begins in a part of the large intestine called the colon. The colon is the first and longest part of the large intestine. The large intestine is the last part of the digestive system. Many factors may increase the risk of colon cancer, including age, family history, personal history, and lifestyle factors. Colon cancer is one type of colorectal cancer (cancer that starts in the colon or the rectum). Here are five symptoms of colon cancer that should never be ignored.

3/18

Changes in bowel habits

Though the symptoms do not appear right away, certain signs could hint at a risk. Persistent changes in bowel movements, such as diarrhea, constipation, or a narrowing of the stool, that last for more than a few days can signal a risk. Colon cancer patients often feel that the bowel isn’t emptying completely. These changes lasting more than a few weeks warrant medical attention. Unexplained shifts in bowel patterns are a red flag, and they should not be overlooked.

4/18

Blood in the stool

If you see bright red or dark stools, it may indicate bleeding in the digestive tract, a potential sign of colon cancer. While hemorrhoids or other benign conditions can cause similar symptoms, persistent or recurring blood may not be a good sign. Seeing blood in the stool requires immediate action, and hence it is important to consult your doctor right away.

5/18

Abdominal pain or cramping

Consistent abdominal discomfort, such as cramps, bloating, or pain, may indicate a tumor obstructing the colon. Pain persisting beyond a few days, especially if severe or worsening, should be evaluated. Most of the time, this symptom is mistaken for less serious issues like irritable bowel syndrome. Also See: Colon cancer on the rise among youngsters: 5 warning symptoms that should not be ignored

6/18

Unexplained weight loss

Losing weight without trying is not a good sign. Sudden, unintentional weight loss can be a warning sign. This is because cancer cells can alter metabolism, leading to weight loss even without changes in diet or exercise. This symptom is particularly concerning when paired with others on this list.

7/18

Excessive fatigue

Feeling weak or unexplained fatigue that doesn’t improve with rest can be an early sign of colon cancer. Tumors may cause internal bleeding, leading to anemia, which shows up as tiredness or weakness. Feeling unusually drained without a clear cause needs to be evaluated right away.

8/18

Watch your diet

It is important to eat a diet rich in whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and limit ultra-processed foods, and processed meat for better gut health.

9/18

Stay safe

Take care of yourself by following these

10/18

Exercise

Incorporate at least 150 minutes of exercise a week. Exercise is linked to a reduced risk of cancer.

11/18

Limit red and processed meats

Red and processed meats such as beef, pork, hot dogs, and sausages are linked to higher colon cancer risk due to compounds like heme iron and nitrates. So limiting them can decrease the risk.
12/18

Limit sugar and salt

Excessive sugar and salt are not good for gut health.

13/18

lifestyle changes that can reduce the risk of cancer

Significant evidence suggests that a substantial portion of cancer cases can be prevented through modifiable lifestyle choices. Key among these is avoiding tobacco in all its forms, as it's the leading cause of various cancers. Maintaining a healthy weight through a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, while limiting processed foods, red and processed meats, and sugary drinks, is also crucial. Regular physical activity helps regulate hormones, reduce inflammation, and improve immune function, all of which contribute to lowering cancer risk. 5 yoga poses that connect you with nature
