Prevention of colon cancer

Colon cancer develops in the large intestine also known as colon which is at the end of the digestive tract. Colon cancer usually affects older people, but it can strike anyone at any age. Polyps, which are small, noncancerous clumps of cells formed on the inside of the colon, can develop into colon cancers over time.
Dr. Neha Berry, Senior Consultant Gastroenterology, BLK- Max Hospital Delhi says, “The risk of colon cancer can be significantly decreased by taking preventive steps. While some risk factors, including age and family history, are unavoidable, early screening and lifestyle changes like healthy food, exercise, and managing weight can help lower your risk of developing colon cancer.”
Here are a few tips that can help in reducing the risk of developing colon cancer.

2/7

Go for timely screening:

The best way to avoid developing colon cancer is to get routine screening done after the age of 45 years. The treatment becomes easier if the cancer is detected at an early stage. Finding abnormal growth known as polyps that can develop into cancer can also help avoid the disease. Screening of colon cancer is simple, it can include colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, CT colonography and stool test. However, they must be conducted more frequently and are based on the patient's medical history or other risk factors.

Quit smoking:

“Regular smokers have an increased risk of developing colon or rectal cancer, as well as a higher mortality rate as compared to non-smokers. Colorectal cancer risk rises linearly with cigarette smoking intensity and duration. You must quit smoking to lower your chance of developing colon cancer,” says Dr. Berry.

4/7

Avoid alcohol consumption:

An increased risk of colorectal cancer has been associated with alcohol consumption. The risk of colon cancer can be reduced by cutting back on or by quitting alcohol. It is recommended to limit your alcohol intake to no more than two drinks per day for males and one drink per day for women.

5/7

Manage a healthy weight:

According to Dr. Berry, Colon cancer is more likely to affect people who are overweight or obese. Furthermore, men are more at risk for colon and rectal cancers than women when their body mass index (BMI) is high. You can manage your weight by adopting healthy eating habits and engaging in more physical activity.

Take a healthy diet: A lower risk of colon or rectal cancer has been associated with diets that are high in vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. In addition, avoid processed meats and red meat like lamb as they have been associated with a higher risk of colon cancer.

7/7

Regular physical activity:

You may have a higher chance of getting colorectal cancer if you are not physically active. Therefore, increasing your physical strength can lower your risk of colon cancer and assist you in controlling your weight. Spend at least 30 minutes each day, five days a week, working out as it will help in managing weight. It is beneficial to engage in a combination of exercises for 150 minutes per week.
