5 warning signs that one is consuming too much salt

The human body requires salt to maintain proper fluid levels, and regulate the nerve system. However, the consumption of excessive salt poses negative effects on your body. High salt consumption gives rise to High Blood Pressure and excessive urine production, along with other additional issues. Mostly, people do not even realise that they are consuming more salt than needed, since their taste buds develop accordingly with time. However, your body does give some signs. Here are 5 ways to know that you are consuming too much salt....

2/6

Swelling and water retention

Swelling or puffiness serves as a common, but less noticeable symptom of excessive salt consumption. Salt consumption forces your body to hold on to water, (known as water retention) which leads to swelling in body parts including your hands, feet, ankles and face. The swelling causes your ring to fit tighter, and your shoes to become uncomfortable. Salt leads to water retention because it draws liquid into your bloodstream and tissues, to achieve proper balance.

The medical term for the same "pitting edema", occurs when a swollen area shows a depression following pressure application, indicating that your body is retaining excessive fluid because of salt consumption.

3/6

Excessive thirst

Salt in your diet pulls out water from your cells, leading to a feeling of dehydration. Your thirst becomes unusually strong, and persists for an extended period, compared to usual thirst. Your mouth and lips stay dry, and despite drinking water, you continue to crave for fluids.

The body triggers thirst to prompt fluid consumption, while working to counteract excessive sodium levels within your system. Your body sends a warning signal through excessive thirst, when your salt consumption reaches dangerous levels.

4/6

High (or Higher than usual) Blood Pressure

High Blood Pressure stands as the most severe consequence that develops from excessive salt consumption. Your bloodstream carries more fluid after salt consumption, which produces elevated pressure against your blood vessels. The prolonged elevation of blood pressure damages the cardiovascular structure, while increasing your risk of developing heart disease, together with stroke and kidney issues.

High blood pressure often produces no noticeable symptoms, so you should regularly monitor your blood pressure. When your blood pressure reaches 140/90 mmHg during morning measurements, it typically indicates that too much salt has affected your body.

5/6

Weight gain

When you experience rapid weight gain (amounting to one to two kilograms during a day or two kilograms within a week) without altering your food or exercise routine, then salt could be the culprit. Excessive salt in your diet leads to water retention, which results in unexpected weight gain.

Your body maintains additional fluid through water storage, to maintain sodium equilibrium, which produces short-term weight fluctuations. The weight gain is proof that your body's fluids have become unbalanced, because of excessive salt consumption.

6/6

Stomach discomfort and bloating issues

High salt consumption generates effects that extend beyond blood and fluid systems. The consumption of high salt levels causes your stomach and gut to expand, while creating discomfort throughout the digestive system. This also leads to gas and abdominal pain, especially after you have eaten a salty meal. This happens because salt consumption delays the digestive process, and damages stomach lining tissues. The occurrence of bloating or digestive problems right after eating salty foods, may indicate that your salt consumption exceeds safe levels.
