5 warning signs your skin is giving you

The skin is the largest organ of the body, and works as a protective shield against the outside world. It protects us, and healthy skin is also a sign of good health. However, when something is wrong with the body, our skin gives some signs that one must take note of carefully, to detect early health issues, and treat them immediately. Here are five important warning signs your skin might be showing, that suggest that something is not right.

2/6

Rashes that do not get better

We all get a rash here and there due to varied reasons, such as allergies, tight clothing, sweat, jewelry, infections, or irritants. However, if you notice a rash that does not go away or keeps getting worse (or grows), it could be a sign of a more serious problem.
Warning signs: Red, itchy, or inflamed patches that spread or become painful. They might even feel warm to the touch.
Possible causes: Chronic skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, or contact dermatitis; or infections like ringworm or impetigo.
When to act: If the rash lasts more than a couple of weeks, spreads, or comes with other symptoms like fever or blisters, consult a doctor as soon as possible.

3/6

Itchy, scaly patches

Dry, scaly, or crusty areas on your skin (that are seen like a rough patch) that itch or do not heal can indicate several skin problems. Sometimes, these patches appear on sun-exposed areas like your face, hands, or scalp.
Warning signs: Rough, scaly patches that may be pink, brown, or gray; skin that feels thick or crusty.
Possible causes: Psoriasis, eczema, fungal infections, or actinic keratosis (a precancerous condition caused by sun damage).
Actinic keratosis can develop into skin cancer if untreated, so persistent rough patches need medical attention.

4/6

Persistent redness

Occasional redness or blushing is normal after scratching or waxing your skin, but if your face stays red for a long time or you experience frequent flushing, it could be a sign of a skin condition or other health issues.
Warning signs: Persistent redness on cheeks, nose, forehead, or chin; visible small blood vessels; dry or swollen patches.
Possible causes: Rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis, lupus, or other inflammatory conditions.
When to act: Persistent redness can be managed with effective care, so consult a doctor.

5/6

Non Healing Sores

A sore or lesion on your skin that does not heal even after days, or grows quickly can be a serious warning sign.
Warning signs: Sores that bleed, crust, or become painful; lumps or bumps that grow rapidly (especially if they are hard and immovable) ; skin that is tender or inflamed.
Possible causes: Skin infections like cellulitis, abscesses, or skin cancers such as basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, or melanoma.
When to act: Any sore or lesion that fails to heal within a few weeks or changes rapidly should be checked by a dermatologist immediately.

6/6

Sudden changes to skin texture

Changes in the color or texture of your skin without a clear cause can signal underlying health problems.
Warning signs: Dark patches, light spots, thickened skin, or new growths; skin that feels rough, dry, or cracked.
Possible causes: Skin infections, allergic reactions, hormonal changes, or systemic illnesses like diabetes or liver disease.
When to act: If these changes persist or worsen, get a check up done.
