6 foods to avoid if your uric acid is high

Uric acid, a natural waste rproduct that is formed when body breaks down purines, substances which are found in certain food such as lentils, spinach, and is also produced by our kidneys naturally. Now, normally uric acid dissolves in blood, passing through kidneys and is eliminated in urine but if your body has too much uric acid and your kidneys can't remove it then, it causes a condition called hyperuricemia, which further leads to gout (form of arthritis) or kidney stones.

2/11

Why is uric acid important?

Uric acid is a normal waste product that occurs as part of the breakdown of purines in the body. If its levels are too high, it causes sharp crystals to build up in joints and results in gout, an excruciating disease. Diet is important in controlling uric acid. Excluding some foods helps minimize flare-ups and maintain long-term joint health.

3/11

Organ meats

Organ meats contain very high purines. These substances dissolve into uric acid and raise its levels in the blood. Regular intake of organ meats leads to burning pain in gout. In people with high uric acid, these must be avoided completely to avoid any pain and discomfort.

4/11

Paneer & full-fat dairy

Even though they are vegetarian foods, full-fat dairy foods such as paneer and milk contain saturated fats. Saturated fats make the kidneys less capable of eliminating uric acid. It is possible to switch to low-fat or fat-free dairy products to control uric acid levels while fulfilling protein and calcium requirements.

5/11

Seafood

Some seafoods are high in purines by nature, and thus, they are not safe for people who have high uric acid. Regular consumption could lead to the accumulation of uric acid and gout attacks. If you are dealing with uric acid, seafood should be consumed in moderation, and it is recommended that you talk to your doctor about healthy protein intake options.

6/11

Sugary drinks

Beverages with high added sugars, especially those containing fructose, may increase the production of uric acid. Fructose speeds up the metabolism of purines by the body, causing more uric acid. Drinking water or unsweetened drinks instead of sugary soda and juices is a sure way to improve uric acid management.

7/11

Alcohol

Alcohol, particularly beer and liquor, disrupts the body's capacity to eliminate uric acid. It also assists in creating it, thus, alcohol is a two-edged sword. Moderate consumption alone can increase uric acid levels. Decreasing or completely avoiding alcohol is highly advised for those who are susceptible to gout attacks

8/11

Refined carbohydrates

Foods like white bread, pasta, and sugary pastries that are low in fiber and quickly spike your blood sugar levels, refined carbs increase insulin resistance, which reduces the kidney's ability to eliminate uric acid. Replacing them with whole grains can help manage uric acid levels more effectively.

9/11

Can turn to stones too

Sometimes, uric acid can also form stones, so take utmost care

10/11

Eat smart for better health

Controlling uric acid isn't so much about eating what you do—it's about eating what you don't. Cutting out purine-rich foods and high-fructose foods from your diet can reduce gout to a great extent. Eating well-balanced meals, making smart food choices, and consulting a doctor can keep you healthy and pain-free.

11/11

Drink water

It is equally important to stay hydrated.
