Heart health: American cardiologist recommends 6 best supplements for the heart

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. One person dies every 34 seconds from cardiovascular disease, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

As cardiovascular diseases are on the rise globally, keeping the heart in top shape is more important than ever. While lifestyle changes such as eating a nutritious diet, regular exercise, quitting alcohol, and smoking are important, you can also boost heart health by adding the right supplements. Dr. Dmitry Yaranov, a leading heart transplant cardiologist based in Memphis, US, has shared the only supplements he suggests his patients take to improve heart health. “As a cardiologist, I routinely prescribe certain supplements to my patients alongside their medications to support heart health,” he said. What are those supplements? Let’s take a look.

2/9

Omega-3 Fatty acids (fish oil)

At the top of Dr. Yaranov's recommendations is, of course, omega-3 fatty acids. Sourced from fish oil or fatty fish such as salmon, this supplement provides essential fats that have been linked to cardiovascular benefits.
These essential fats have been extensively studied for their cardiovascular benefits. “Proven to reduce triglycerides, lower blood pressure, and decrease arrhythmia risks. Found in fish oil or fatty fish like salmon,” the cardiologist said, in a post shared on Instagram.

3/9

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)

Second on the cardiologist’s list is coenzyme Q10, or CoQ10, which acts as a powerhouse for heart cells. This antioxidant helps to generate energy and also combat oxidative stress. “Supports cell energy and may help reduce blood pressure and improve heart function, especially in heart failure patients,” the doctor explained.

4/9

Magnesium

Yes, magnesium supplements are also beneficial for heart. Their health benefits go beyond sleep. Magnesium is a vital electrolyte for muscle function. Half of Americans struggle with magnesium deficiency. Dr. Yaranov notes that magnesium is “key for regulating heart rhythm and blood pressure. Deficiency can lead to arrhythmias and high BP.”

5/9

Fiber (Psyllium, Oat Bran)

Though fiber is not always classified as a traditional supplement, it plays a crucial role in heart health. Soluble fiber from psyllium husk or oat bran is on Dr. Yaranov's list of supplements for the heart. Why? “Soluble fiber lowers LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, reducing heart disease risk,” he says.

6/9

Potassium

Next on his list is potassium, which helps regulate blood pressure by easing tension in blood vessels and counteracting the effects of sodium. It also supports proper heart muscle function and fluid balance within cells. “Balances sodium and helps regulate blood pressure. In cardiology, we monitor potassium levels closely (4-5 mEq/L is ideal),” the doctor added.

7/9

Vitamin D

Vitamin D, also known as the sunshine vitamin, plays a crucial role in heart health. About 40% of the US adults have vitamin D deficiency. This is tied to heightened heart risks, including stiffness in arteries. “Deficiency can increase heart disease risk. Supplementation may improve heart health in those with low levels,” the cardiologist added. You can also bask in the sun for a couple of minutes in the sun for your daily vitamin D dose. Sunlight exposure, fatty fish, fortified dairy, and supplements are also some of the effective ways to maintain healthy vitamin D levels.

Consume a healthy diet
