6 symptoms of Vitamin E deficiency that are easy to ignore

Vitamin E is an essential antioxidant for your overall health. Vitamin E plays a major role in the prevention of diseases, is essential for biochemical functions, and protects the cells of the body from deterioration.Vitamin E strengthens the immune system, skin, and the eyes. However, it's a fat soluble vitamin and there are some types of diseases or nutritional deficiencies that may cause vitamin E deficiency. A deficiency of Vitamin E leads to the symptoms, some are slight and some are destructive. Here are six signs that shows Vitamin E deficiency in the body.

2/7

Muscle weakness

This is among the most common and earliest symptoms of Vitamin A deficiency. For the maintenance of muscle tissue integrity through protecting cells from oxidative stress, this vitamin is very important. Low levels of Vitamin E contributes to muscle cells become vulnerable to damage, leading to weakness, fatigue, or spasms.

3/7

Poor coordination and balance (ataxia)

Vitamin E is essential in maintaining the nerves health, especially the nerves that are involved in movement and coordination. It’s deficiency can kill the nervous system and produce ataxia-like symptoms of loss of balance and coordination.
Ataxic patients will be unable to walk straight, are likely to be clumsy, or have trouble with fine motor coordination like buttoning a shirt. This is due to degeneration of certain neurons of the cerebellum and peripheral nervous system. At advanced stages, these symptoms can resemble neurological diseases, and diagnosis needs to be done properly.

4/7

Numbness and tingling

Peripheral neuropathy is another of the neurological manifestations of Vitamin E deficiency, causing numbness, tingling, or burning sensations in the hands, feet, arms, or legs. Symptoms are evident because of damage inflicted on the nerves by the absence of antioxidant protection that Vitamin E would otherwise provide.
This type of injury can still get worse, disrupting one's sense of feeling heat, cold, or pain, possibly increasing the risk of harm. If these sensations persist or are worsening, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional.

5/7

Impaired vision

Vitamin E is also required for healthy eyes. Deficiency results in damage to the retina and other structures in the eye, and vision problems may follow. All of these are potential warning signs early on: blurred vision, problems concentrating, or sensitivity to light. Chronic deficiency can even lead to more serious conditions like retinal degeneration, which could become irreversible if prevented.
While it is true that vision loss can be due to a multitude of causes, when combined with other signs of shortage, they may be a sign of an issue with nutrition.

6/7

Immune system complications

Vitamin E aids the immune system by making the body more responsive to fighting infection. Vitamin E deficient persons will get sick often or take a long time to recover from ordinary infections such as colds, flu, or cuts.
This is particularly important in older individuals, who are most likely to be vitamin E deficient and may already have an impaired immune system. Vitamin E-deficient children can be susceptible to respiratory infection and other disease.

7/7

Dry skin or hair problems

Vitamin E, which is an antioxidant, is needed for healthy skin and hair. Deficiency would cause dry, scaly skin or brittle, thinning hair. The skin may become rough or inflamed and wound healing would be delayed because there is no cell regeneration and repair.
Though most people apply Vitamin E externally through creams or oils, internal deficiency needs food or supplement correction. Dietary foods high in Vitamin E like almonds, sunflower seeds, spinach, and avocados must be incorporated into the diet on a regular basis.

Vitamin E is also needed for healthy vision. Deficiency causes eye damage to the retina and other eye structures, and vision disturbances can result. All of these are possible warning signs early on, blurred vision, difficulty concentrating, or light sensitivity. Chronic deficiency can even produce more severe problems such as retinal degeneration, which could become irreversible if it is not prevented.
