7 health conditions that hands can reveal

Our hands aren't simply tools that help us do practically everything in the world. We of course, can't imagine our lives without the use of hands, but these organs, or specifically the palm areas, can also serve as a window to our overall health and well-being. Your hands display different warning signs through color, texture changes, and sensory shifts which can indicate physical issues. Here are 7 health conditions that your hands can reveal...

2/8

Vertical Ridges on Fingernails

Vertical ridges appear as lines which extend from the cuticle toward the nail tip. The condition is usually benign, and occurs commonly as one ages. The appearance of deepened ridges together with brittle nails or discoloration, may indicate underlying health problems such as:

Nutritional deficiencies (like low iron or vitamin B12)
Circulation problems
Sometimes arthritis
Consult a doctor for evaluation when you experience these ridges, along with pain symptoms.

3/8

Red Palms (Palmar Erythema)

The color of your palms becoming red or flushed, may indicate different health conditions. When blood flow increases to the hands, it produces palmar erythema which can be associated with multiple conditions.

The liver condition cirrhosis or hepatitis can lead to this symptom.
Rheumatoid arthritis or other inflammatory diseases
The body undergoes hormonal changes particularly when women become pregnant.
When your palms remain red without explanation, while also presenting fatigue or joint pain symptoms, you should consult a healthcare provider.

4/8

Swelling in Fingers

Swollen fingers produce both stiffness and pain and typically develop from:

Injury or overuse
Arthritis (especially rheumatoid arthritis)
Fluid retention linked to kidney, heart, or liver problems
Allergic reactions or infections
The combination of swelling along with redness or warmth, indicates an infection or inflammation which requires immediate medical care. Swelling that persists and disrupts daily functioning, requires medical evaluation.

5/8

Tremors in the Hands

Tremors describe uncontrolled shaking movements which occur frequently among people. Serious medical issues become more likely when hand tremors become more noticeable, or severe than usual.

Essential tremor (usually inherited and harmless)
The neurological disorder Parkinson's disease produces hand shaking primarily during periods of rest.
Side effects from medications or anxiety
Low blood sugar or withdrawal symptoms
Medical evaluation becomes necessary when hand shaking disrupts your daily activities, or you experience either weakness or stiffness.

6/8

Cold Hands

Cold hands or fingers that always feel chilly may be caused by:

Heart and blood vessel diseases resulting in poor blood circulation.
The condition, Raynaud's phenomenon, causes fingers to turn white or blue during cold conditions or periods of stress.
Hypothyroidism (low thyroid function)
Nerve damage
Medical advice becomes necessary if your cold hands present color changes or pain, alongside numbness or ulcers to prevent complications.

7/8

Tingling or Numbness in Hands

Nerve problems trigger tingling sensations or numbness, which medical professionals refer to as "pins and needles." The most common reasons for this condition include:

Carpal tunnel syndrome develops when wrist pressure compresses the median nerve which leads to thumb and index and middle finger numbness and tingling.
Diabetes causing peripheral neuropathy
Vitamin deficiencies
Nerve compression or injury
A healthcare provider needs to diagnose and treat your condition if tingling persists, or becomes severe, or if you frequently drop objects.

8/8

Dark Knuckles

The skin discoloration found over knuckles can stem from multiple possible medical conditions including:

Pigment changes due to sun exposure or friction
The condition of hyperpigmentation develops because of Vitamin B12 deficiency and other vitamin deficiencies.
Addison’s disease produces dark skin patches throughout the body with the knuckles and elbows showing the most prominent changes
Eczema or other skin conditions
Consult a doctor if your knuckles turn dark for no apparent reason or if dark skin patches expand across your body.
