Common household products loaded with forever chemicals (PFAS)
PFAS or forever chemicals are a lurking threat for our well-being which are silently putting us at risk of dangerous health conditions like cancer, liver damage, asthma, and thyroid disorders. The exposure is even more detrimental to children, newborns, and causes birth defects and delayed development. PFAS, short for Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances, are used in a range of products from cookware, clothing, mobile phones to carpets. Exposure to even small amounts can lead to big damage. They are also called forever chemicals, because they literally take 'forever' or a very long time to break down.
Here are common household items that are filled with forever chemicals or PFAS and are putting us at grave risk of many diseases.
Nonstick cookware, especially those made with Teflon may have PFAS, although the harmful PFOA has been phased out since 2014. Current research doesn't indicate significant risks from using nonstick pans, but one should avoid overheating cookware or not use damaged cookware, as PFAS in their coatings can still be a concern. To minimize exposure, avoid using metal utensils that can scratch the surface. Don’t cook at temperatures above 500℉, and never heat an empty pan, as this can degrade the coating and release toxic fumes. Opting for alternatives like ceramic, cast-iron, or carbon-steel cookware can further reduce PFAS exposure.
1. Raincoat
Think twice before buying any piece of clothing that is water-resistant and has a more stain-resistant finish, most likely has PFAS. From raincoat or yoga pants, to shoes are loaded with forever chemicals which find their way into your body whenever you use them. They continue to contaminate the environment long after you discard them.2. Shampoo
Another item that we use without thinking much on a regular basis is shampoo. PFAS are added to these products as they make it smoother and easy to spread, and more durable. However, these products could get inside the eyes or mouth, exposing the body to the toxic chemicals.3. Nail polish
Be mindful of what your cosmetic products are doing to your health as they are full of PFAS that are usually added for better texture and durability. Nail polish can especially increase the exposure to such chemicals as we are more likely to bring our fingers closer to our mouth while eating. Many people may also bite their nails in nervousness. They are also used in eye makeup to prevent it from spreading or being too watery.4. Pizza boxes
One of the common sources of PFAS exposure is food packaging. Look out for grease-resistance packaging as this could mean forever chemicals may have been used for it. Avoid heating your food in such packaging as this will increase your exposure further. It's is also important to make your popcorn on stovetop and not PFAS-treated microwave bags.5. Nonstick cookware

6. Water
Nearly half of America's tap water has been contaminated by PFAS, or perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, making drinking water a significant source of exposure. These chemicals, which are invisible to the naked eye, seep into the environment through rainwater, soil, and sediment, eventually contaminating drinking water supplies. Once in the water, PFAS accumulate in the body over a period of time, raising risk of serious health conditions like cancer, liver damage, and immune system disruption.end of article
