Pain associated with a COVID infection is typical

Coronavirus induced COVID puts the body through a number of complications in the course of the infection. Apart from the tell-tale signs like fever, runny nose, sore throat and nasal congestion many people suffering from COVID infection also experience immense pain in the joints and muscles.

The pain associated with a COVID infection is typical and distinct from other types of pain.

How to spot a COVID related body pain?

These points may help you understand how a COVID body pain feels like. Also, with the help of this guidance you can save yourself from mental anxiety figuring out the reason behind the pain.

Body pain associated with COVID is often seen in muscles and joints. These pains make the limbs dull and may limit mobility and strength.

The intensity of the pain varies from individual to individual. While in some people it can be a dull pain, in some it can be like pangs of pain or a continuous aching sensation.

In many other cases, the body pain may interfere with the daily activities of the individual.

3/7

Why does it happen?

Body aches happen as a reaction to the inflammatory response from the immune system. Inflammation is the body's response to the viruses.

When the body fights against the virus, the reaction generates several symptoms like fever, runny nose, loss of smell and taste, nausea, headache.

Body aches can also be due to fever and dehydration as well.

4/7

What is the prevalence of COVID body pain?

According to the data available in the ZOE COVID Symptom Study, 1 in 3 people are likely to get body aches during COVID. The study further says that the incidence of muscle pain and joint pain is seen in individuals aged between 16 and 65 years old and more prominently seen in people above 35 years of age.

Body pain during COVID is less common in children.

5/7

When does it happen?

Experts have said it to be one of the initial symptoms of the disease. The ZOE COVID Symptom Study says people who are in the age where they are more likely to experience body pain, may get it in the initial days of the infection and this may last for 2-5 days. In older individuals it can last for up to 8 days even.

6/7

Body ache as a long COVID symptom

Muscle pain, pain in the joint areas and pain in the back are commonly seen in people during and after COVID.

In many people these problems existed beforehand and partly due to lockdown and partly due to the fear of contracting the infection, the physical activity of many people was affected as a result of which the pain exacerbated during the pandemic.

Long COVID is a group of symptoms which is seen in people even months and years after a COVID infection. Muscle pain and pain in other parts of the body has been reported by patients many days after the infection.

7/7

Tips for managing body pain

Take medical help, if the pain persists for a longer duration. Do not wait for it to go away on its own.

If you already have this issue, make sure to keep your body mobile during the course of infection. Engage yourself in some sort of physical exercise.

Do not stop doing exercises, just because you are unwell. Physical inactivity has been tracked as one of the major adverse effects of COVID lockdown which was imposed by governments worldwide to stop the spread of the infection.

Lack of physical activity makes the body a breeding ground for several life threatening diseases.
