Creatine vs. Protein Powder: Which one do you really need?

The supplement market is booming, and in the world of sports nutrition, creatine and protein powders are some of the superstars. Gym goers looking to build muscle and boost performance often pick one of these. But do you really need them? Do they provide benefits as they claim? Which one should you be taking? Should you take both? Take a look.

2/5

What is creatine?

Creatine is an organic compound found naturally in your muscle cells. An amino acid, creatine, provides energy and produces adenosine triphosphate (ATP), an energy-storing compound found in your cells. Breakdown of this ATP provides energy for cell functions, including muscle contraction.
When creatine is taken in supplement form, it helps to increase muscle mass, strength, and exercise performance. So when you take creatine supplements, it increases the phosphocreatine stores in your muscles. This molecule helps to produce energy for a short bout of muscular contractions. Creatine also makes the muscles appear fuller.
Creatine supplement comes in different forms, and monohydrate is the most common among them. Other forms include creatine citrate, creatine hydrochloride, creatine pyruvate, creatine malate, and sodium creatine phosphate.
Creatine is also found naturally in many foods, such as meat and fish.

3/5

What are protein powders?

Protein powders are dietary supplements made from various protein sources. These protein supplements come in powder form. There are different types of protein powders - whey, casein, egg, and also plant-based varieties derived from soy, pea, hemp, and brown rice.
When it comes to protein quality, whey tops the list. Whey is one of the primary proteins found in dairy products, often a by-product of cheese production.

Whey protein is popular among bodybuilders and gym goers. Consuming whey protein following exercise has been shown to improve recovery and increase muscle mass. Studies have shown that it improves strength, power, and muscular function.

However, supplements are not a replacement for food sources. People who exercise regularly may require more protein, and that's where supplementation comes in.

4/5

Should you really take supplements?

Both creatine and protein powder contain different compounds and work differently. While one increases performance, the other helps in exercise recovery. Both these supplements are linked to increased muscle mass.

Whether you should take these supplements really depends on your fitness goals and health. Which to take also depends on what your individual goals are. Some people take them together, hoping to get added benefits. But studies have shown that it may not be ideal.

It is important to understand that supplements are not supposed to replace your diet or eating habits. Most importantly, consult a physician or registered healthcare professional before starting new supplements to your diet.
