Delhi sizzles as temperatures cross 40°. Here is how to (quickly) recover from a heatwave

It is that dreaded time of the year again, when most of North India is battling a severe heatwave. The National Capital Delhi, has been consistently recording a temperature of 40° or more, and despite some rain, there has been little relief, as temperature continues to rise, with the hot. gusty "loo" making things worse. Unfortunately, the heat does not stop everyday life, so if you have caught a sun stroke or heatwave, here are some easy ways to recover from it...

2/6

Rehydrate with natural drinks

During a heatwave, your body loses a lot of water through sweat. This can lead to dehydration, making you feel weak and dizzy. The best way to recover is to drink plenty of fluids, but not just plain water. Try natural drinks that also replace lost salts and minerals.

Coconut water: It’s full of electrolytes like potassium and magnesium, which help balance your body’s fluids.

Buttermilk: A traditional Indian drink that cools the body and aids digestion.

Fresh fruit juices: Watermelon, orange, and cucumber juices are refreshing and hydrating.

Herbal teas: Mint or chamomile tea, served cold, can soothe your body and keep you hydrated.

Avoid sugary sodas and caffeinated drinks as they can make dehydration worse.

3/6

Cool down your body quickly

After a heatwave, your body temperature may still be high, making you feel uncomfortable. Here are some easy ways to cool down quickly:

Take a lukewarm shower: Avoid very cold water as it can shock your body. Lukewarm water helps lower your temperature gently.

Use a damp cloth: Place a wet cloth on your forehead, neck, and wrists. These areas have blood vessels close to the skin, so cooling them helps reduce body heat.

Wear loose, light-colored clothes: Cotton or linen fabrics allow your skin to breathe and reflect sunlight.

Stay in shaded or air-conditioned places: Give your body a break from the heat to recover faster.

4/6

Eat Light

Heavy, oily, or spicy foods can make your digestion slow and your body feel tired after a heatwave. Instead, choose light meals that are easy to digest and full of nutrients to restore your energy.

Fresh fruits and vegetables: They contain water, vitamins, and antioxidants that help repair your body.

Salads with cucumbers, tomatoes, and carrots: These cool your body and provide fiber.

Soups and broths: Light vegetable or lentil soups hydrate and nourish you without making you feel heavy.

Avoid fried and junk foods: These can increase body heat and cause discomfort.

Eating smaller meals more often can also help your body absorb nutrients better and keep your energy steady.

5/6

Rest it out

Heatwaves can disturb your sleep because of the heat and humidity. But good rest is essential for your body to recover. Here’s how to improve your sleep after a heatwave:

Keep your room cool and dark: Use fans, air conditioners, or open windows at night to create a comfortable environment.

Use light bedding: Heavy blankets can trap heat, so use cotton sheets or light covers.

Avoid screens before bed: The blue light from phones and computers can affect your sleep quality.

Try relaxation techniques: Deep breathing or gentle stretching can calm your mind and help you fall asleep faster.

Getting enough sleep helps your immune system repair cells and regain strength.

6/6

Natural remedies

Nature offers many simple remedies to help your body recover from heat stress. These can calm your nerves, reduce inflammation, and boost your energy.

Aloe vera juice or gel: Known for its cooling and healing properties, aloe vera can soothe your digestive system and skin.

Tulsi (holy basil) tea: It helps reduce stress and supports your immune system.

Chilled lemon water with honey: This natural drink refreshes and provides vitamin C.

Fenugreek seeds soaked overnight: These help balance body heat and improve digestion.

To avoid heat strokes, keep sun exposure to a minimum between 11 am - 4 pm, and use scarfs/dupattas to cover your face.
