The reasons behind foul-smelling urine

Smelly urine is not uncommon, but a strong smelling pee can signal a chronic health issue. A well-hydrated and healthy body usually does not produce foul-smelling urine, rather has little to no odor. According to the Mayo Clinic, if your urine becomes highly concentrated i.e. if it includes high levels of waste products with little water, your urine may have a strong ammonia odor.

Some foods and medications can also lead to urine odor, even in low concentrations. However, smelly urine can also be a sign of health conditions.

Diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic condition that occurs either because your pancreas is unable to produce enough insulin or your body is unable to effectively utilize the insulin it produces.

Uncontrolled diabetes can often lead to foul-smelling - strong, sweet and fruity - urine. The sugary, sweet smell comes from the sugar in your urine and is a sign your body is trying to get rid of extra sugar in your blood.

Urinary tract infection (UTI)

A bacterial infection like a urinary tract infection (UTI) can also lead to bad-smelling urine. The pee can smell like ammonia, wherein it suggests that the bacteria may be present in the urinary system, which includes urethra, kidneys or bladder.

Prostatitis

Prostatitis is a disorder of the prostate gland usually associated with inflammation, describes the Mayo Clinic.

Besides leading to painful and difficult urination, it can also cause foul-smelling urine. Similar to bladder infection, prostatitis can lead to a rotten egg-like smell in your urine.

Liver problems

According to MedlinePlus, liver disease can lead to “musty-smelling urine." The smell indicates a buildup of toxins in the urine, which is caused when the liver is unable to break it down efficiently.

This smell may also be accompanied by dark colored urine, which may range from brown, amber, or even orange due to the buildup of bilirubin.

How to detect?

To know what you're suffering from, you need to first identify the related symptoms. UTI, diabetes, liver disease and prostate problems often come with other symptoms that can help you confirm your diagnosis. However, the best way to know what you're dealing with is by getting yourself examined by the doctor. Get necessary tests and only then get treated, depending on your diagnosis.
