Want to age well? Cardiologist shares tips

Anti-aging supplements, cosmetic procedures, creams, juices - the market is flooded with products and services that claim to preserve your youthfulness. But the truth is that most of them only remain as big vain promises. Dr. Sanjay Bhojraj, a board-certified interventional cardiologist and functional medicine doctor with over 20 years of clinical experience, revealed the secret to aging like fine wine. No, it won’t cost you an arm and a leg. In fact, it's free. Let’s take a look.

Healthy aging

While aging is an inevitable part of life, it doesn’t have to make you weak and ill. One can age healthily, live a quality life, and be less dependent on others. How? Dr. Bhojraj says longevity starts at home. “Want to age well? Start here, not all the pharmacy,” the doctor said.
The cardiologist emphasized that lifestyle has a crucial role in overall health. “After 20 years as a Cardiologist, here’s what most people don’t realize. Over 80% of chronic disease is driven by lifestyle—not genetics,” he said, in a post shared on Instagram.

How to age well?

The doctor stresses the importance of making good lifestyle choices. These include exercise, diet, and more. “That means how you move, eat, sleep, and manage stress determines far more about your longevity than what’s in your medicine cabinet. And yet… most people start at the pharmacy instead of with their physiology,” he said.

Best anti-aging tool

According to Dr. Bhojraj, the most powerful anti-aging tool is ‘intentional movement’. Studies have consistently shown that exercise is linked to a longer and healthier life. Regular exercise can guarantee quality of life and longevity. A 2022 study found that physical activity may play a stronger role than genetics in determining longevity. "Our study showed that, even if you aren't likely to live long based on your genes, you can still extend your lifespan by engaging in positive lifestyle behaviors such as regular exercise and sitting less. Conversely, even if your genes predispose you to a long life, remaining physically active is still important to achieve longevity,” the researchers said.

Movement beyond walking

While walking is one of the easiest forms of exercise, and is tied to multiple health benefits, you should also add other movements to your fitness regimen. “Not just walking—movement that challenges your muscles, expands your lungs, and tells your cells, stay alive, stay strong,” the doctor said.
The cardiologist emphasized that strength training and aerobic exercises are crucial to prevent chronic diseases. “Studies show consistent strength and aerobic training can lower your risk of heart disease, diabetes, and cognitive decline by up to 50%. No pill comes close to that. Your mitochondria—the engines of your energy and longevity—thrive on oxygen, sunlight, and motion,” he said.
The doctor added, “That’s not a hack—it’s how your body was designed to heal.”
