Six health conditions your eyes can reveal

It is said that the eyes are the mirror of your soul and reflect everything that seems to be hidden. But if you look closely it can also be a reflector of your health. Those bright and opalescent eyes can provide a detailed insight into your health, provided you know how to read them. Detecting these signs can help you take medical help at the earliest and avoid complications from growing further. Here are 6 health conditions your eyes can reveal:

2/7

Diabetes

Blurry vision is a common eye-related problem, but it can also be linked to Type 2 diabetes. Chronic high blood sugar level puts strain on the blood vessels, resulting in noticeable specks of blood in the back of the eyes. The bloodshot in the eyes means the blood sugar level has reached a dangerous level and requires immediate attention. If the glucose level is left untreated, it may lead to blindness.

3/7

Cancer

The sign of breast cancer can be manifested even in your eyes. When the cancerous cells start spreading to other parts of the body, the signs may even appear in the eyes. Abnormal lesions or masses/tumors within structures of the eye like the uvea (the middle layer of tissue in the wall of the eye) indicate that the cancerous cells have spread to the eyes. In case you have problems like blurry vision, eye pain, or seeing flashes or floaters contact your doctor.

4/7

High cholesterol

High cholesterol levels in your blood can gradually build up in your eyes. The visible sign is a white, gray or blue ring formed around your iris. While the ring is also formed due to ageing, another reason could be a high cholesterol level. If at any age you witness a ring in your eyes, get your cholesterol level tested. High cholesterol can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke.

5/7

Damaged retina

Have you ever noticed little pecks that move around your field of vision sometimes? They are called floaters and are visible to all on occasion. But a sudden increase in the number of floaters indicates retinal tear or detachment. These signs should not be ignored as over time they may lead to grave damage to your eyes.

6/7

Infection

A visible white spot on your cornea (a clear layer over the front of your eyeball) can be a sign of corneal infection. It is mostly witnessed among those who use contact lenses instead of glasses. Contaminated lenses with bacteria or fungi are the common cause of the infection. The condition can lead to corneal scarring and pain.

7/7

Jaundice

If the whites of your eyes turn yellow then it indicates that you are suffering from jaundice. Jaundice is a condition that occurs due to excessive bilirubin (a yellow compound formed from the breakdown of red blood cells) in your blood. The amount of the compound increases in the blood when your liver cannot filter it properly. The condition can also make your urine and skin turn yellow.
