Getting a Flu shot this fall? What to eat and drink before and after

As summer bid adieu and rolled out the carpet for autumn, the fall season has officially begun in the United States of America. Along with the crisp in the air and the fall colors on the leaves comes the season of flu. With fall kicking in already, many Americans are prepping themselves for the flu shots – lining up at the clinic doors, wand in hand, ready for our annual pinch.

However, taking the flu shot is not just about turning up at the clinic and getting injected. Only a few truly consider what we should have in our stomach before and what we should get after taking the shot.

What do we eat and drink before arriving at the clinic? What about the edibles and beverages after we’re done getting the jab? While the vaccine itself is the shield, what you fuel your body with matters too. Nutrition and hydration don’t just matter for general health; they can support your immune system in mounting a strong response and help reduce side effects.

In this article, let’s explore what to eat and drink before and after getting the flu shot this fall. We’ll explain why these choices matter, what experts recommend, what to avoid, and how small habits can make your vaccination experience smoother. After all, vaccination is a moment – but your body’s recovery and response span days. So? Let’s get ready!

2/9

Before the shotHydrate, hydrate, hydrate

Drink extra water the day before and on the day of your vaccine. Experts often recommend aiming for an extra 16 ounces (about 500 ml) of water beyond your usual intake. Staying well hydrated helps your blood flow better, supports kidney and lymphatic function, and mitigates side effects like headache or fatigue.

3/9

Eat a balanced, colorful meal

Enjoy a mix of lean proteins (chicken, fish, beans), whole grains (brown rice, oats, whole wheat), and plenty of vegetables and fruits. These supply vitamins (C, A, E), minerals (zinc, selenium), and antioxidants – all critical for immune function. Anti-inflammatory foods – such as berries, leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and fatty fish – can reduce baseline inflammation, helping your immune system respond more smoothly.

4/9

Bring a snack

If you feel nervous or might faint, having a light snack like a banana, a nut bar, or whole-grain crackers before your appointment can be helpful. Some studies show that eating a little before vaccination can prevent anxiety-related fainting.

5/9

Avoid alcohol and heavy or greasy meals

Alcohol can dehydrate you and suppress some immune responses, so it’s best to avoid it in the 24 hours before the shot. Also, heavy, ultra-processed, or fried foods may increase inflammation or make digestion sluggish – less ideal when your body is gearing up for a vaccine response.

6/9

After the shotKeep hydrating

Continue drinking water in the hours and days following your shot. This helps flush any byproducts, supports circulation, and may reduce side effects such as headache or muscle aches.

7/9

Probiotics and gut-friendly foods

Including yogurt, kefir, fermented vegetables (kimchi, sauerkraut), or foods high in prebiotics (onions, garlic, bananas, oats) may support your gut microbiome, which in turn supports immune health and may enhance vaccine efficacy.

8/9

Gentle, digestible foods if needed

If you feel mild nausea or low appetite – a possible side effect – stick to foods like plain toast, crackers, rice, bananas, boiled potatoes, or simple soups. If you feel normal, resume balanced meals with proteins, vegetables, and whole grains.

9/9

Avoid alcohol and not too much strain

It’s wise to avoid alcohol for a day or two after vaccination, as it can dehydrate or dull your immune response. Also, while normal activity is fine, heavy or strenuous exercise (especially if you feel unwell) can be postponed for 24-48 hours.
