Harvard doctor approved 5 foods that help lower blood pressure naturally

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a leading cause of premature death and cardiovascular disease across the globe. A silent killer, hypertension is a major risk factor for stroke, heart disease, kidney disease, and other serious illnesses. Keeping the blood pressure under control is crucial to keep life-threatening diseases at bay. While proper diet, exercise, and prescribed medications can help regulate blood pressure, certain foods can help you keep it in check.

Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a California-based gastroenterologist trained at Harvard and Stanford, with a million Instagram followers, has shared a list of fruits that can help lower blood pressure. Remember these dietary recommendations are not alternatives for medications, but they can certainly help.

High blood pressure

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, happens when the force of your blood pushing against the walls of your blood vessels is too high.
High blood pressure is a leading cause of premature death and cardiovascular disease globally. It is a silent killer and a major risk factor for stroke, heart disease, kidney disease, and other severe diseases.

3/13

Banana

Bananas are a good source of potassium, a mineral that plays a critical role in regulating blood pressure. Dr. Sethi explains that potassium helps the kidneys flush out excess sodium, a key contributor to high blood pressure. You can add bananas to smoothies or eat them as a snack, and this can be an easy way to incorporate this nutrient into your daily diet.

4/13

Dark chocolate

Yes, that’s right! Your occasional indulgence could save you from severe illnesses linked to high blood pressure. Indulging in dark chocolate may benefit more than just your taste buds. They are rich in magnesium and flavanols, and can lower blood pressure by boosting the production of nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessels. A2010meta-analysis of studies suggested that flavanol-rich cocoa products, like dark chocolate, modestly reduced blood pressure in adults with hypertension. Ensure to pick dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa content, and remember to consume it in moderation.

5/13

Beetroot

Beets are great for your overall health and are especially good for lowering blood pressure. Its high content of organic nitrates is converted by the body into nitric oxide, which dilates blood vessels and improves blood flow. You can incorporate beetroot into salads, juices, or smoothies. Roasted beets or beetroot powder can also be effective options for those looking to amp up the flavour.

6/13

Pomegranates

Pomegranates are packed with antioxidants, particularly polyphenols, which have been shown to reduce blood pressure by lowering levels of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), a key regulator of blood pressure. A 2017reviewfound that pomegranate juice can reduce BP in both the short-term and long-term course. "These effects are accompanied by antioxidant and anti-atherosclerotic actions that collectively improve cardiovascular health. The anti-hypertensive effects have been reported for pomegranate juice. Both systolic and diastolic pressures are affected,” the study said.

7/13

Ginger

Ginger, which is a staple in many cuisines, acts as a natural calcium channel blocker, which can help relax blood vessels and lower blood pressure. It can also improve cardiovascular health by lowering blood pressure. You can add fresh or powdered ginger to teas, stir-fries, or smoothies for its flavour and heart health benefits. While generally safe, it is important to consume ginger in moderation, as excessive intake may cause digestive discomfort in some individuals.

8/13

Walk more

Walking is simple, but so effective

9/13

Stay agile

Agility and exercise will naturally bring down your bp

10/13

Eat a balanced diet

Ensure to eat a well-balanced and nutritious diet. Incorporate whole grains, vegetables, legumes, lean proteins, fatty fish, and superfoods. Limit salt, sugar, and ultra-processed foods.

11/13

Limit ultra-processed foods

Ultra-processed food is not beneficial for overall health, and can especially raise blood pressure, due to its high sugar, salt and oil content.

12/13

How to maintain normal blood pressure?

Maintaining normal blood pressure is crucial for preventing serious health complications like heart attack, stroke, and kidney disease. It primarily involves a combination of lifestyle modifications and, often, prescribed medication. Key strategies include adopting a heart-healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains while limiting sodium, saturated fats, and processed foods. Regular physical activity, aiming for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week, is also vital, as is maintaining a healthy weight.

13/13
