Having chest pain? These reasons could be triggering it

2/11

Cardiovascular diseases and why are they overlooked

Cardiovascular diseases, especially conditions like heart disease and stroke, are a significant public health concern, yet lack of awareness just exaggerates the issue. A considerable portion of the population underestimates their vulnerability, often overlooking key risk factors such as high blood pressure, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and smoking.

According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 17.9 million lives are lost each year due to Cardiovascular diseases. This lack of understanding and preventive action leads to a higher incidence of cardiovascular diseases and yet a lot of them pass unnoticed. Raising awareness about these risks, promoting healthier lifestyles, regular health check-ups, and educating about early symptoms are vital steps in reducing the prevalence and impact of cardiovascular diseases on individuals and communities.

3/11

Chest pain or cardiac arrest

Chest pain refers to discomfort or aching felt in the chest area, often behind the breastbone. It can result from various causes such as heart issues, muscle strain, digestive problems, or respiratory conditions. The severity and nature of chest pain can vary, ranging from a sharp, intense sensation to a dull ache. And while chest pain often triggers fears of a heart attack, it's crucial to understand that not all chest pain is cardiac-related. In fact, many other factors can cause chest discomfort.

4/11

Musculo-skeletal issues

Musculoskeletal issues pertain to problems affecting the muscles, bones, tendons, ligaments, and other structures that support and enable movement of the body. In the context of chest pain, musculoskeletal issues primarily involve conditions related to the chest and upper back area. The most common reason could be heavy lifting which could have potentially strained the chest.

5/11

Gastrointestinal conditions

Various gastrointestinal conditions can feel like cardiac chest pain. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) often causes a burning sensation or discomfort in the chest due to the backflow of stomach acid into the esophagus. Additionally, peptic ulcers, gastritis, or esophageal spasms can provoke chest pain.

6/11

Pleuritic chest pain

Chest pain can result from respiratory conditions such as pneumonia, pleurisy (inflammation of the lung lining), or pulmonary embolism (a blockage in the lung artery). These conditions can elicit sharp or stabbing chest pain, often exacerbated by breathing or coughing. If not treated on time, Pulmonary embolism can prove to be life threatening.

7/11

Anxiety and panic disorders

Psychological factors like anxiety, panic attacks, or stress can manifest as chest pain. The body's response to stress can cause muscle tension, shallow breathing, and chest tightness. People experiencing anxiety or panic attacks might perceive these symptoms as chest pain, even though they originate from emotional distress.

8/11

Pancreatitis

Acute pancreatitis is an abrupt inflammation of the pancreas, situated behind the stomach. Typically, it manifests as severe abdominal pain that may extend to the chest. The inflammation in the pancreas is commonly triggered by gallstones, which are solid, pebble-like formations of hardened cholesterol. Interestingly, pancreatitis is more prevalent in women than in men.

9/11

Pericarditis

Pericarditis is the inflammation of the pericardium, the sac-like membrane surrounding the heart. This condition can cause chest pain that typically worsens when lying down or taking deep breaths. The pain may radiate to the shoulders and neck and is often sharp or stabbing. To check, see if the pain improves when leaning forward or while sitting up.

10/11

Costochondritis

Costochondritis refers to the inflammation of the connective tissue between the ribs and the breastbone. It often leads to a sensation of pressure on the chest wall and tenderness when the affected area is pressed, similar to the tenderness experienced with a strained muscle. The common causes behind costochondritis are typically arthritis, chest trauma, strenuous lifting, infections resulting from surgery, intense physical exertion etc.

11/11

Treatment and help

It's essential that anyone experiencing chest pain should seek immediate medical attention to rule out cardiac issues, especially if the pain is severe, radiates to the arm or jaw, is associated with shortness of breath, or is accompanied by nausea or sweating. A timely diagnosis helps in seeking appropriate treatment and management.
Medical professionals will conduct a thorough evaluation, which may include physical examination, imaging studies (e.g., X-rays, CT scans), and possibly cardiac tests (e.g., ECG, stress test) to determine the cause of chest pain and develop an effective treatment plan.
