Health alert: 5 warning signs on nails you should not ignore

Your body sends you signals long before any serious health issue pops up. In fact, a 2015 study published in IDOJ says that nails act as a window of systemic diseases. Your nails often give you signs before symptoms appear; however, most of us overlook them. Dr. Rohini Patil, a nutritionist, explained some serious warning signs on nails that many people ignore. “Your nails can reveal serious health issues before symptoms appear. White spots, spoon-shaped nails, yellow, thick nails, blue tint, deep lines, or nail lifting are not normal. They can signal nutrient deficiencies, thyroid, liver, kidney, heart, or lung problems. Don’t ignore the signs,” she said in a video shared on Instagram.

White spots on nails

You may have noticed white spots on your nails at some point. What does this mean? This isn't usually a sign of a serious medical condition, and could be caused by an injury to your nail matrix. However, not all white spots or lines are normal. These could also be signs of zinc deficiency or kidney problems, Dr Patil said.

3/6

Spoon-shaped nails

If your nails are curved upward at the edges, forming a spoon-like shape, it's a cause of concern. Dr Patil noted that it could be associated with anaemia. They may also point to thyroid disorders or heart-related problems. So, it is important to overlook this sign.

Curved nails

Do you have nails that are curved around your fingers? It’s not really a sign of healthy nails. “This might be an early sign of low oxygen, lung disease, heart failure, or liver disease,” the nutritionist cautioned.

5/6

Yellow nails

Do not ignore yellow nails. Thick, yellow nails is not a positive sign. "This is a sign that there must be a fungal infection inside your body," Dr Patil said. As the infection worsens, the nail bed may retract, and nails become thick and crumble.

6/6

Dark tips

Do you have white nails with dark tips? If so, it is crucial that you consult your doctor right away. Also known as Terry’s nails, this could mean serious health concerns. “This indicates there can be liver issues like hepatitis, kidney issues, or diabetes,” she said.

If you notice these signs, it is crucial that you visit your doctor right away. These could be signs of an underlying or emerging health condition. These are subtle signs, so noticing them is important. Do not overlook these signs.
