Cardiologist shares 5 everyday medications that silently damage the heart

How often do you pop a pill? For headaches, cold, diarrhea, constipation, itchy skin, acne - the list goes on. Yes, they surely relieve your health concerns. But are they coming at the cost of your overall health? Especially heart health? Shocking news! Dr. Dmitry Yaranov, a leading heart transplant cardiologist based in Memphis, US, explains how some of the common drugs damage heart health. “As a cardiologist, I see how some commonly used medications can silently damage your heart,” the doctor said. Here are some of the common medications to watch out for. Take a look.

NSAIDs

NSAIDs, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, are medications that reduce pain, fever, and inflammation. They are a drug class FDA-approved for use as antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic agents. These include Ibuprofen and Naproxen. However, these everyday medications have a negative effect on your heart. “Over-the-counter painkillers might seem harmless, but regular use can increase blood pressure, cause fluid retention, and even lead to heart failure in some cases,” the doctor warned. It’s important to use NSAIDs only as directed and consult a doctor if you need them frequently. Long-term or excessive use can also harm your kidneys and digestive system, so monitoring and professional guidance are essential to minimize risks and ensure safe use.

Chemotherapy drugs

Certain chemotherapy drugs, such as Doxorubicin and Trastuzumab, are also linked with heart-damaging traits, according to Dr. Yaranov. These drugs can potentially lead to cardiotoxicity, which weakens the heart muscle, and cause heart failure. “While life-saving, some cancer treatments can weaken the heart muscle, leading to heart failure. Close monitoring is critical!” the cardiologist said.

Stimulants

Stimulant medications like amphetamines, often prescribed for ADHD, can cause increased heart rate and blood pressure. “These can raise heart rate and blood pressure, increasing the risk of arrhythmias and even heart attacks,” the doctor warned.

Diabetes drugs

About 830 million people worldwide have diabetes, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Half of them are taking medications. Dr. Yaranov has warned that some diabetes medications like Rosiglitazone could be damaging the heart. “Some older diabetes medications have been linked to a higher risk of heart failure. Newer options are safer—talk to your doctor,” he said, in a video shared on Instagram.

Decongestants

Yes, some of the common medications you take for cold and congestion may damage your heart, according to the cardiologist. He noted that medications containing Pseudoephedrine are harmful for the heart. “Found in many cold medications, these can spike blood pressure and trigger arrhythmias, especially in people with underlying heart conditions,” he revealed.
“Always read labels and ask your doctor about side effects. Your heart health depends on it!” the doctor said. Also See: How eating a single clove daily can improve heart health and manage cholesterol naturally
