Stomach flu, also known as viral gastroenteritis, is one of the common problems that affects people of different age groups. In most of the cases, the person may experience symptoms like nausea, queasy all morning and are unable to digest food. The person may also experience stomach cramps, diarrhoea, and a low fever. Stomach flu is the result of viruses that infect the intestines. The belly flu, also called viral gastroenteritis, isn't associated with the actual influenza virus. It spreads without difficulty from man or woman to character, contaminating surfaces and meals.

Dr. Mangesh Borkar, Consultant, medical gastroenterologist, Manipal Hospital, Kharadi-Pune says, “The signs and symptoms generally subside within 1-2 days and the symptoms are generally not extreme. It could resolve on its own with relaxation and hydration. However, in some cases, especially young kids, older adults, and people with underlying fitness situations can get dehydrated and also need hospitalisation. If signs get worse, it is recommended to call a physician. In any other case, the remedies to get rid of belly flu are common hand washing, disinfecting surfaces, and fending off near contact with people who are infected.”

​​Common signs and symptoms of stomach flu​


Dr. Borkar says, “The stomach flu, also known as viral gastroenteritis, is an infection that affects the digestive system. While it is commonly referred to as the "stomach flu," it is not related to influenza, which is a respiratory illness.”
The symptoms of stomach flu in adults can vary, but typically include:
Nausea and vomiting: These are common symptoms of stomach flu and may occur frequently or intermittently.
Diarrhoea: Loose or watery stools are common during a stomach flu infection. It can range from mild to severe and may be accompanied by abdominal cramps.
Abdominal pain and cramping: Many individuals experience abdominal discomfort or cramps during the illness, which can range from mild to severe.
Fever: Some adults may develop a low-grade fever, typically below 101°F (38.3°C).
Fatigue and weakness: Stomach flu can cause a general feeling of tiredness and weakness.
Headache: “Some individuals may experience headaches during the course of the illness,” says Dr. Borkar.
Muscle aches: Body aches and muscle pains can be present, similar to what one might experience with the flu.
Loss of appetite: Many adults with stomach flu may have a reduced desire to eat due to the associated nausea and discomfort.

​​How stomach flu spreads​


According to Dr. Borkar, “The stomach flu, additionally called viral gastroenteritis, spreads through direct contact with infected people or contaminated surfaces. While an infected man or woman vomits or has diarrhoea, the virus can spread to surfaces like doorknobs, light switches, phones, toys, and used diapers. If you contact these infected surfaces and then reach the mouth.”
