Kidney vs Gallbladder stones

While kidney stones and gallbladder stones may sound similar to many, these are two quite different health issues. Kidney stones, as the name suggests, affect the kidneys, while gallbladder stones are formed in the gallbladder. For the unversed, the kidney help remove toxins from the body along with the urine. Meanwhile, the gallbladder is a small organ under the liver, and it produces bile-- which helps in the digestion of fats. And so, both kidney and gallbladder stones have different causes, symptoms, and treatments. Understanding the differences between kidney stones and gallbladder stones can help one notice the warning signs early on and also get the right treatment.

Kidney Stones and Gallstones: Key differences

While both kidney stones and gallbladder stones involve the formation of hard, stone-like substances in the body, these are two strikingly different health conditions. The main difference between the two is where they form and what they’re made of.

Kidney stones are form in the kidneys, which are part of the urinary system. These stones are generally made of minerals-- like calcium or uric acid-- as they build up in the urine when it becomes too concentrated due to dehydration, poor diet, or genetics. These stones can move into the urinary tract, and lead to intense pain in the back, sides, or lower abdomen and even cause issues with urination.

Gallbladder stones, or gallstones, are form in the gallbladder— which is a small organ under the liver and it helps in digesting fats. These stones are generally made of cholesterol or bilirubin. Over time, gallstones can block the flow of bile and hence causes pain in the upper right abdomen. This usually happens after eating fatty meals, along with symptoms like nausea or bloating.

5 very early symptoms to watch out for

People who suffer from kidney or gallbladder stones often feel subtle warning signs early on. Here we list some of them which should not be ignored:

4/12

Dull pain in the abdomen or sides

One of the earliest signs of kidney stones is feeling a dull pain in the lower back, sides, or groin. This dull pain may come and go, especially after moving or drinking less water.
On the other hand, pain due to gallstones is generally felt as mild discomfort or heaviness in the upper right abdomen, especially after eating fatty meals. While it is often mistaken for gas or indigestion, it shouldn't be taken lightly or ignored if it happens frequently along with other symptoms. Do get yourself tested and consult your doctor for the same at the earliest.

5/12

Vomiting or feeling uneasy after eating

One of the most common and earliest signs of Gallstones is nausea or bloating after meals, especially after eating fried or oily foods. This happens because the gallstones often block the bile flow, thus making the digestion of fats harder.
In case of Kidney Stones, a person may feel nauseous if it is irritating the kidney or causing a mild infection. This is often accompanied by a dull backache.

6/12

Changes in urine

A person suffering from Kidney Stones, may notice changes in their urine or bathroom habits as kidneys are responsible for filtering the blood and removing toxins from the body through urine. If the urine turns cloudy, foul-smelling, or reddish it can be an early sign of small stones in the kidney. Some people also feel a burning sensation while urinating, similar to a UTI.
In case of Gallstones, the urine is generally not affected unless complications like bile duct blockage occurs, which is more advanced.

7/12

Frequent or painful urination

Another early sign of Kidney Stones is the frequent urge to urinate. This happens when the kidney stone is near the bladder. If his is accompanied with small amounts of urine and pain, the do consult your doctor for it.
In case of Gallstones, any urinary changes aren’t common unless there’s an infection due to obstruction in the bile duct.

8/12

Mild jaundice (i.e. yellowing of skin or eyes)

In case of Gallstones, a blocked bile duct can lead to bilirubin build-up in the body. This can cause mild yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes (also called Jaundice). This is one of the early signs of a possible obstruction in the gallbladder.
Meanwhile, in Kidney Stones there's typically no sign of jaundice. If present, it may indicate an unrelated liver or gallbladder problem in the body.
