Early detection of lung cancer is important
Lung cancer happens when cancer-causing agents trigger abnormal cell growth in the lungs. In many cases, cigarette smoking can lead to lung cancer. However, even non-smokers can develop this form of cancer.
According to Cancer Net, if lung cancer is detected in an early, small stage, then the cure rate can be as high as 80 to 90 percent. Lung cancer can metastasize to other body parts, such as the brain, lymph nodes, liver, adrenal glands, as well as knees.
Diagnosis after disease has advanced
Lung cancer is usually diagnosed in the advanced stages of the disease as there is an absence of symptoms in the initial stages of the disease. By this time, the tumor has spread to neighboring tissues and can infect other body organs.

When tumor metastasizes to knee
According to several health bodies, tumors from lung cancer can metastasise or spread to the connective tissue areas around the knee, resulting in knee pain. Knee pain can also result from unusual complications from lung cancer – such as neoplastic syndromes.

How knee is impacted by metastasising tumor
When the knee is impacted by a metastasising tumor from lung cancer, symptoms include:
-Pain
-Swelling
-Decreased ability to stand
-Impaired ability to straighten the knee
Average survival with knee symptoms
“Lung carcinoma is the most common primary malignancy to metastasise to synovial tissue and the knee joint is the most common joint to be affected,” note researchers at the Archive of Proceedings of Baylor University Medical Center.
Synovial tissue is a connective tissue in the protective membranes surrounding the body’s joints. It keeps the joints well lubricated, which is needed for the joints to work.
“Unfortunately, all synovial metastasis carries with it a dreadful prognosis. Average survival after discovery is five months,” add the experts.
How long does it take for lung cancer symptoms to appear?
Some lung cancer patients have a tumor for years before it shows obvious signs for detection. According to Medicine Net, it can take around eight years for squamous cell carcinoma to reach the size of 30mm, when it is most commonly diagnosed. At this stage, the most common signs include persistent or frequently recurring cough, difficulty in breathing, or an ache and pain when breathing.
