Signs of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) is a common and sometimes serious infection of the female reproductive organs. It occurs when bacteria from the vagina or cervix spread to the uterus, fallopian tubes, or ovaries, causing inflammation and potential damage to these organs. PID can lead to various complications, including infertility, chronic pelvic pain, and an increased risk of ectopic pregnancy.
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) is a global health concern, and its prevalence can vary among different populations and regions. Understanding the initial signs of PID is crucial for early detection and prompt treatment. Some of the major symptoms include:

2/8

Pain in the lower abdomen

Dr. Manjusha Goel, Lead Consultant - Obstetrics & Gynaecology at the CK Birla Hospital (R), Delhi says, “Persistent or intermittent pain in the lower abdominal region is one of the primary signs of PID. The pain may range from mild to severe and can be accompanied by a feeling of heaviness or pressure in the pelvic area.”

3/8

Abnormal vaginal discharge

Women with PID may experience an unusual vaginal discharge that is yellow or green in colour. The discharge may have a strong, unpleasant odour. It is important to note that not all cases of abnormal discharge indicate PID, but when accompanied by other symptoms, it should raise concern.

4/8

Irregular menstrual bleeding

According to Dr. Goel, “PID can cause changes in menstrual patterns. Some women may experience heavier or longer periods, while others may have irregular bleeding or spotting between periods. Any sudden or unexplained changes in menstrual bleeding should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.”

5/8

Pain during sexual intercourse

PID can lead to discomfort or pain during sexual intercourse. This pain may be present deep in the pelvis and can range from mild to severe. If you experience pain during sex, it's important to discuss it with your healthcare provider.

6/8

Fever

“A low-grade fever (below 101°F or 38.3°C) is a potential sign of PID. However, it's important to note that not all cases of PID present with a fever, so the absence of fever does not rule out the possibility of the disease,” says Goel.

7/8

Painful urination

Some women with PID may experience pain or a burning sensation while urinating. This symptom can be mistaken for a urinary tract infection, so it's important to consider other symptoms and seek proper medical evaluation.

8/8

Fatigue and general malaise

“In some cases, women with PID may experience fatigue, general weakness, and a feeling of being unwell. These nonspecific symptoms can be attributed to various conditions, but when combined with other PID symptoms, they should not be ignored,” advises Goel.
It is significant to remember that each individual can experience different levels of intensity and combinations of symptoms. Additionally, some women with PID may experience only mild or vague symptoms, making it even more important to seek medical attention if they have any concerns about reproductive health. Apart from that, it is also recommended to practise safe sex and get vaccinated for human papillomavirus (HPV) after consulting a doctor. Good personal hygiene is also essential for preventing infections. This includes daily washing of the genital area with mild soap and water. However, it is important to note that excessive cleaning or douching can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria in the vagina and increase the risk of infections. In case of persisting symptoms, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation and appropriate management.
