Pain you should never ignore

Our bodies are constantly sending us signals when something isn’t right. While many aches and pains can be harmless or temporary, certain types of pain should never be brushed aside. They can point to life-threatening conditions that require urgent medical attention. Recognizing these red flags early and acting quickly could make all the difference for your health. Here are seven types of pain you should never ignore and why they matter.

2/8

Chest pain

Call 911 immediately. Chest pain can mean you’re having a heart attack or another dangerous event such as a pulmonary embolism. Warning signs include heavy pressure or tightness, crushing pain radiating to the neck, jaw, left arm, or back, and pain paired with shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or nausea.

3/8

Pelvic pain

Severe new pelvic pain should never be dismissed. In women, it could point to a ruptured ovarian cyst or an early ectopic pregnancy, while in both men and women, it could signal appendicitis—each requiring urgent care.

4/8

Sudden severe headache

If you experience the worst headache of your life or one accompanied by fever, vomiting, stiffness, seizures, rash, vision problems, speech issues, or weakness, seek immediate help. It could be a stroke or a serious brain infection such as meningitis. Any severe headache after a head injury also warrants emergency attention.

5/8

Severe or persistent abdominal pain

Abdominal pain that doesn’t ease or is paired with fever, tenderness, or blood in the stool can indicate dangerous conditions like appendicitis, diverticulitis, or pancreatitis. These require prompt medical care.

6/8

Eye pain

Seek an eye doctor right away if you have stabbing pain, redness with pain, vision changes, or sudden flashes of light. Trauma to the eye or these symptoms can be signs of glaucoma, retinal detachment, infection, or inflammation inside the eye.

7/8

Unexplained back pain

Not all back pain comes from strained muscles or bad posture. If the pain appears suddenly, lingers without relief, or worsens over time, it can be a red flag. Conditions such as spinal infections, certain cancers, or nerve compression can show up as persistent back pain. Warning signs to watch for include pain that spreads to the legs, numbness, weakness, or unexplained weight loss.

8/8

Painful urination with back pain

Burning or discomfort while urinating is often linked to urinary tract infections, but when it’s accompanied by back or side pain, it could signal something more severe. Kidney infections and kidney stones are two common culprits. A kidney infection may also bring fever, chills, or nausea, while stones can cause sharp, cramping pain that comes in waves.
