Pre-diabetes: 5 early symptoms that show up on the body

Prediabetes is a condition where blood sugar levels are elevated, but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes. In other words, it is a stage when the body is asking for help. It is diagnosed when fasting glucose is between 100 and 125 mg/dL. Over time, this resistance can progress to diabetes and raise the risk of heart diseases, stroke, kidney problems, and nerve damage.

Studies suggest prediabetes can be reversed with a structured diet and exercise programs. But how exactly can one identify that they’re progressing towards or already suffering from this condition? Prediabetes can progress without noticeable symptoms, making early detection challenging. However, certain physical signs can serve as early indicators, and recognizing them can help with timely intervention.

2/7

Darkened skin patches

Darkened skin patches aren’t just a cosmetic issue, they can be a visible red flag for prediabetes. One of the most visible signs that your body may be struggling with blood sugar regulation is the development of darkened, velvety patches of skin, medically known as acanthosis nigricans.
According to a PubMed Central study, Acanthosis Nigricans hyperpigmented dermatosis is associated with insulin resistance and obesity. This underscoring its significance in identifying metabolic disturbances.
These patches often appear in areas such as the back of the neck, armpits, groin or knuckles.

3/7

Increased thirst

Polydipsia is one of the most common early warning signs of prediabetes. This symptom occurs due to elevated blood sugar levels that begin to affect kidney function. As per Mayo Clinic, excess glucose in the bloodstream pulls water from tissues, which can result in dehydration and increased thirst.
If someone feels dehydrated even after drinking lots of water, it can be a sign of prediabetes. Such individuals must get a blood sugar test done to prevent progression with early intervention.

4/7

Frequent urination

Frequent urination, medically known as polyuria, is a hallmark symptom that can indicate your body is struggling to manage blood sugar levels, even in the prediabetic stage.
When blood glucose levels rise, the kidneys try to remove excess sugar from the blood through urine. This process, called osmotic diuresis, draws water along with glucose, increasing urine volume.
Signs to watch for:
Needing to urinate more than usual during the day.
Waking up frequently at night to urinate.

5/7

Fatigue

Many people dismiss fatigue as a result of a busy lifestyle or stress, but it can actually signal early metabolic disturbances. Persistent tiredness is a subtle but common symptom of prediabetes. Tiredness may occur when blood sugar levels are elevated because cells are unable to effectively use glucose for energy.
According to the American Diabetes Association, fatigue is a common symptom of insulin resistance and prediabetes.

6/7

Slow-healing sores and frequent infections

Delayed wound healing and increased susceptibility to infections reflect early disturbances in blood sugar and immune function. According to NIH, Wound healing is a complex biological process that consists of hemostasis. Insulin resistance disrupts homeostasis by impairing the body's ability to regulate glucose and energy balance.
Signs to Watch For:
Cuts, scrapes, or bruises that take longer than usual to heal.
Recurrent infections (skin, gums, urinary tract).
Noticeable redness, swelling, or pus at wound sites.

7/7

Diagnosis and prevention

Early detection of prediabetes is crucial to prevent progression to type 2 diabetes.
The US Preventive Services Task Force recommends prediabetes and type 2 diabetes screening for all nonpregnant adults aged 35 to 70 who are overweight or obese.
Prediabetes can be prevented with lifestyle and dietary changes:
Prioritize weight loss
Regular muscle activity
Choose whole food diet
Prioritize good sleep
Stress management
