One must not neglect swelling in feet

Peripheral edema, or swelling in the feet, is a frequent condition that can be caused by a number of different things. Persistent or severe swelling in limbs, thighs, and other body parts may point to an underlying problem that needs to be addressed. When deciding whether to be concerned about foot swelling, take into account the following factors:

2/7

Duration of the swelling

It's possible that temporary swelling is natural, particularly after extended standing or sitting. But if the swelling lasts for a long time without getting better, that can be reason for concern.

3/7

Underlying health issues

Swelling and fluid retention can be caused by a number of illnesses, including venous insufficiency, kidney disease, liver disease, and heart failure. If you have a known medical problem, keep an eye out for any increases in swelling and get in touch with your doctor.

4/7

Pain

In the affected location, swelling that is accompanied by discomfort, redness, or warmth may be a sign of an infectious or inflammatory disease that needs to be treated. If the swelling is symmetrical, meaning it affects both feet equally, a systemic problem like fluid retention or a medical condition may be the cause.

5/7

Unexpected weight increase

Unexpected and sudden weight increase could indicate fluid retention and be connected to underlying medical conditions, particularly if it is accompanied by foot edema. Pregnancy-related foot swelling is frequently caused by altered hormone levels and increased blood volume. On the other hand, significant or unexpected swelling has to be discussed with a medical professional.

6/7

Trauma or injury

Localized edema may be the result of a recent trauma or injury to the foot or ankle. Seek medical assistance if there is considerable discomfort, trouble bearing weight, or ongoing swelling. Swelling, especially if accompanied by pain and tenderness, could be a sign of deep vein thrombosis. This is a serious condition that requires immediate medical attention.

Swelling in the ankle
If the swelling is around the ankle and it persists for a while, it would be a good idea to get an abdomen ultrasound done after consulting your doctor. In many cases it indicates towards an unhealthy liver.
7/7

Signs of infection

When swelling coexists with infection-related symptoms like fever, redness, or warmth, it could be an indication of cellulitis or another infection that requires immediate medical attention. Speak with a healthcare provider if you're not sure why your feet are swollen or if it's something to be concerned about. A doctor can prescribe any required tests, conduct a comprehensive evaluation, and take into account your medical history in order to identify the underlying reason for the swelling. Effective therapy and the avoidance of problems depend on the early detection and control of the underlying cause.
