These 5 signs could be the early symptoms of diabetes

Globally, more than 830 million people are living with diabetes, as per WHO. The chronic metabolic disorder, if left unmanaged, can lead to life threatening health issues. Diabetes develops gradually and its initial symptoms can be mistaken for other health issues, leading to which many individuals remain unaware of their condition until complications arise. Recognizing early signs of diabetes can help in early intervention and thus preventing complications. Below are 5 signs that could be the early symptoms of diabetes.

Frequent Urination (Polyuria)

Polyuria is one of the most common signs of diabetes. Frequent urination is a key indicator of type 1 and type 2 diabetes. When blood sugar rises above the normal range, the kidneys work harder to filter excess glucose. However, when the kidneys get worked up, the excess sugar is excreted into the urine and draws along water.
The exact number of urination may depend upon water intake but typically urinating more than 8 to 10 times a day and waking up at night between sleep to urinate 2 to 3 times, can be an early sign of diabetes.

Excessive Thirst (Polydipsia)

Polydipsia is closely linked to Polyuria and is another early sign of diabetes. When kidneys extract excess glucose, more water is drawn from the body and leads to dehydration. This triggers an intense thirst. People with Polydipsia may find themselves drinking much more water than usual, yet still feel thirsty. Studies show polydipsia should not be ignored if accompanied by frequent urination and fatigue.

Unexplained Weight Loss

Another classic early symptom of diabetes, especially type 1 diabetes, is losing weight without even trying.
This happens when the body cannot use glucose to make energy due to deficiency or resistance of insulin. As a result, the body starts breaking down fat to meet its energy needs. In some cases, the weight loss is rapid and sometimes the body loses several kilos within a few weeks.

Increased Hunger (Polyphagia)

When cells become unable to access glucose in blood, the body starts sending hunger signals to fulfil the energy shortage.
Ignoring polyphagia can worsen blood sugar imbalances, as eating excessive food can cause spikes in blood glucose. Despite eating more food, weight loss can still occur as the body is breaking down muscles and fat for energy.

Fatigue or Unusual Tiredness

Constant tiredness and fatigue is an often overlooked early symptom of diabetes. This happens when the body becomes unable to use glucose for energy, and as result cells are starved of fuel, leading to persistent fatigue and low energy.
Studies suggest diabetes related fatigue is not just physical, it can also affect mental alertness and sleep quality.

Recognizing the early signs of diabetes

Recognizing the early signs of diabetes is crucial for effective management of the disease. Early intervention with lifestyle changes, diet adjustments and medical guidance can help prevent complications and the risk of life threatening conditions.
