10,000 steps isn’t a magic number, lesser steps can help the heart

Earlier it was believed that to keep heart health in check, walking 10k steps was a non-negotiable. This year, the hyped benchmark of walking 10,000 steps was widely challenged by many health experts. In fact, in the middle of the year, a study published in The Lancet found that those who walked around 7000 daily steps had a 25% lower risk of cardiovascular disease.

Cholesterol isn’t the only number you should be tracking

This year, many doctors took to social media to make people aware that numbers beyond cholesterol should also be tracked. Doctors advised that cholesterol is definitely an important factor, but it is not the sole indicator of heart or metabolic health. Doctors advise taking more advanced tests that provide insights of other markers such as ApoB, Lp(a). They also emphasized the importance of resting heart rate and VO2 max.

Protein addition in diet is a non-negotiable

In the Indian context, this was not only a mere social media advice, but a concern towards something more rooted. The ICMR issued data that highlighted how Indian food lacks protein, but has too many carbs. This highlighted the importance of adequate protein intake irrespective of the age groups. Doctors cautioned that protein was not only essential for athletes or gym-goers, in fact individuals who do less or little physical activity should also increase their protein intake.

In 2025, gut health was the most talked about topic. Social media to health websites, platforms were loaded with insights from professionals and experts on gut health related tips. This also highlighted the importance of including more fiber in the diet. Experts also emphasised how gut health has a relation to many of the bodily functions.
