Working too hard? It may be impacting your heart health

Are you a hard-working fellow?

“He works very hard” is a phrase that is often worn as a badge of honor in today's fast-paced society. It is a prerequisite and undeniable reality for many individuals striving for success. However, beneath the surface of ambition and dedication, there lies a potential threat to one's most vital organ, the heart. The demands of a relentless work schedule and a hustling lifestyle can exert significant strain on the cardiovascular system, which can lead to detrimental consequences for heart health.
In an era where professional achievements and career progress are regarded highly, the pressure to succeed can be overwhelming and people might overcommit towards work responsibilities. This imbalance between work-related stress and self-care can elevate the risk of heart-related issues.

2/7

Stress levels and heart risk

One of the primary ways in which excessive work affects the heart is through increased stress levels. Overwork can lead to chronic stress, triggering the release of stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. Prolonged exposure to these hormones can raise blood pressure and cholesterol levels, both of which are risk factors for heart disease. Thus, it is important to have a stable work-life balance so that your stress levels don't go above the roof, leading to long term heart risks.

3/7

Lack of physical activity

Long working hours often leave little to no time for physical exercise or an active lifestyle which is a key component of heart health. Sedentary lifestyle is linked to obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. When work demands limit the opportunity to engage in regular physical activity, it can set the stage for a range of heart-related issues. This too calls for an active work-life balance so that one can prioritize physical health as well.

4/7

Binge/stress eating

The relentless pace of a demanding job can influence dietary choices, often leading to poor eating habits. Quick, convenient and often unhealthy food options in the form of takeout or delivery options may become the norm. This food is high in calories, unhealthy fats and sugars with almost negligible proteins, fibers or healthy carbs. These dietary patterns can contribute to obesity and other heart-related problems.

5/7

Overwork and sleep deprivation

Working excessively can disrupt a person's sleep patterns, resulting in inadequate rest for the body and mind. According to the US CDC, “Adults who sleep less than 7 hours each night are more likely to say they have had health problems, including heart attack, asthma, and depression.” Adequate and quality sleep is crucial for the heart to recover and function optimally and thus overworking might pose an obstruction towards healthy heart function.

6/7

Lack of work-life balance

The blurring of boundaries between work and personal life due to excessive work can disrupt the balance needed for a healthy heart. Chronic overwork leaves little time for relaxation, recreation and spending quality time with loved ones. The constant pressure to perform and meet deadlines can create a persistent state of anxiety that negatively affects heart and mental health.

7/7

Neglecting medical checkups

Health checkups work as preventive measures towards long-term problems and not getting tested can make the issues even worse. When individuals are caught in a cycle of overwork, they may neglect regular health check-ups and preventive measures. Thus, regular medical check-ups involving blood pressure checks, cholesterol levels and overall heart health should be prioritized. Neglecting these aspects can escalate the risk of heart disease.
