The arrival of the monsoon season after hot summer days brings everything around us to life. You will find yourself surrounded by greenery and sweet chirping of birds. It seems like the entire world is welcoming the season with open arms.

But not everything about the rainy season is worth welcoming. Monsoon is also famous for food, water and mosquito-borne diseases. The hot and humid climate is perfect for mosquitoes to breed, which carries Zika, Chikungunya, Dengue, and Malaria causing virus. These are deadly diseases, which as per the World Health Organisation (WHO) claim 1 million lives every year.

Try these simple tricks

August 20 every year is celebrated as a World Mosquito Day around the globe to spread awareness about vector-borne diseases. It is important to take crucial measures to prevent mosquito bites to keep ourselves safe. Here are 5 things you can do to prevent yourself from mosquito bites.

3/8

Wear loose-fitted clothes

Wearing loose-fitting clothes is the best defence to protect yourself from a mosquito bite. This way they won't be able to come close to your skin. It is easier for them to bite you when you are wearing body-hugging clothes.

4/8

Wear light coloured clothes

The blood-sucking insect is highly attracted to dark coloured clothes, especially black. If you are donning a black garment then be assured that you will be surrounded by mosquitoes. If you are going out in the evening, try to wear light coloured clothes.

5/8

Put a dryer sheet in your pocket

This is not just an old-age trick, but there is science behind it. Dryer sheet contains linalool and beta-citronellol. Both the chemicals are used in mosquito repellents. If you put them in your pocket, mosquitoes will not come near you.

6/8

Essential oil

Rubbing essential oil on your clothes or using them in a diffuser can also help to keep mosquitoes away. Mosquitoes dislike the smell of eucalyptus, mint, lemongrass and basil. The smell of these essential oils will keep mosquitoes away and will also help you get rid of the musty odd smell during monsoon.

7/8

Burn some incense stick

Smoke can also help to keep mosquitoes away. So take cardboard egg carton and cardboard and burn outside your house or you can also use an incense stick for smoke and remove the odour.
