Longevity expert shares 6 foods which when consumed regularly can increase life span in humans

Staying healthy and leading a longer life is not just about avoiding disease, it is about keeping the cells working. Inside almost every cell in the body are tiny structures called mitochondria, they act like tiny batteries that produce the energy the body needs to function, move, think and even repair itself.
As the body gradually ages, mitochondria can become less sufficient, leading to tiredness, slower recovery and high risk of contracting any illness. Although, certain food items contain natural compounds that protect these cell batteries, keep them running at full capacity and helps slow down aging.
Dr. Eric Berg, wellness expert and best-selling author, shared 6 food items which are beneficial for our health and also support longevit

2/7

Cacao

Cacao contains a special compound called PQQ, Pyrroloquinoline quinone, which is known to help the body grow new mitochondria and keep the existing ones working fine. If one is under severe stress, PQQ also protects mitochondria from damage caused by it. Choosing dark chocolate with at least 85% of cacao gives the most benefit with least sugar present.

3/7

Berries

Blueberries, raspberries and elderberries all are packed with a rich content known as polyphenols, that is a natural plant compound that reduces inflammation and protects the mitochondria in return. Polyphenols protect the brain function, balance blood sugar in the body and reduce damages from what are known as free radicals, by reducing the inflammation in the body.

4/7

Nuts and seeds

Pistachios and sesame seeds are rich in compounds called coenzyme CoQ10, along with healthy fats and antioxidants, a good plant based option to support heart and brain health. The coenzyme Q10 helps the mitochondria by supporting the process that turns food into usable power. It often acts like an antioxidant, protecting cells from the damage caused by age.

5/7

Spirulina

Might sound strange at first because this is a form of algae, a blue-green coloured one, it is often sold in powder or tablet form, containing phycocyanin, a compound that encourages the body to produce more mitochondria, it also supports the body's ability to repair DNA, fight off stress at the cellular level. In addition to fighting stress, it also fights inflammation and oxidative stress.

6/7

Fatty fish

Fatty fish such as salmon, sardines and mackerel, are all high in omega-3 fatty acids, commonly known as EPA, DHA are two well-known healthy fats that protects mitochondria, reduce inflammation and support the brain, heart and joints as well. They also improve how the body responds to insulin, helping in control blood sugar in the body. Cod liver oil is also another supplement that can provide enough omega-3 acids for the body to function especially heart and brain properly.

7/7

Meat

Meat, especially from grass fed animals contain L-carnitine, is a molecule that transports fatty acids into mitochondria, from where they are converted into energy. It speeds up the process of burning fat, helps preserve muscles during heavy exercises and also aids in quick recovery. Although other sources of L-carnitine include, poultry and fish as well.
