How to get rid of grey hair, naturally

Usually, with age, we might accept the grey lining on our scalp. But when it comes to spotting grey hair at a younger age, we would definitely want to get rid of them. Something similar happened with one of our readers. At an early age, Yogita Mehta started getting grey hair. Here she shares what she did to cover her greys, naturally.

"While combing my tresses, I spotted a strand of grey hair shooting up from my scalp."

It was like any other day. I was getting ready for my college. While combing my tresses, I spotted a strand of grey hair shooting up from my scalp. I ignored it and continued detangling my hair. But it wasn’t one strand but a whole patch right in the middle of my head. And I got the biggest shock of my life. (Obviously, at an age of 22, what else can be a shocker for you than getting grey hair!). I became so worried that I rushed to my mother and showed her my grey hair. I could sense that she also got worried. But just to make me feel better, she said that getting grey hair is natural and a sign of getting wiser. This wasn’t something that could comfort me though. And I decided to visit a salon and get my hair coloured.

"I was not convinced to get hair coloured"

After coming back from my college, I asked my mother to accompany me to the salon as I was not convinced to get hair coloured at such an early age all by myself. And neither was my mother in favour of applying chemicals to my hair. Thankfully, the hairdresser there was my mother’s friend and what she advised proved a blessing for my tresses, A DIET! She suggested me to have iron and biotin supplements for a period of six months and to put unsalted buttermilk with curry leaves in my hair before every wash as that would help me to get black and healthy hair from roots. But as my mother was really skeptical about taking a medicine, that too without a doctor’s consultation, I took an advice from our family doctor. After his approval, I went to a chemist shop, took those capsules (that he recommended) and also decided to eat iron and biotin enriched foods.

4/10

1st month

1st MONTH: I started to have an iron and a biotin capsule after my lunch. I also started to eat green veggies like spinach and methi (which once I hated the most). I researched online and I found out that eating right, living a stress-free life and exercising can help in getting rid of grey hair. The next morning I started walking for at least 40 minutes a day. I also started practising meditation and yoga. I was at that stage where I could do anything to cover my grey hair as I knew that if I will not do anything right now, grey hair will spread on my whole scalp. Not to forget, I, not completely but, reduced intake of junk food.

2nd month

2nd MONTH: I was still on the recommended supplements, was following my fitness regime and was eating right. But not even a single strand turned out black. After a little more research, I found out that applying amla juice to your hair helps you get smooth, shinier and black hair. I immediately extracted amla juice, applied it to my hair and left it on for 45 minutes. After washing my hair with a mild shampoo, I could feel the difference. My hair got smooth and soft. But didn’t cover my greys. “Of course, it wouldn’t magically turn my greys into black at one go”, I consoled myself and decided to apply amla juice after every sometime. And of course, I was still applying the recommended buttermilk.

3rd month

3rd MONTH: It was already two months and still no result. I was disappointed and told my mother that now I would apply hair colour. She told me to be patient and wait till my new hair grow. I accepted her suggestion and decided to wait for some more time.

7/10

4th month

4th MONTH: My hair started to grow and guess what, the new hair growth was black! Not completely but I would say that 40 per cent of my new hair growth was black in colour. I was happy. After all, my hard work and healthy eating habits were paying me back. Finally, the supplements that I was taking without any miss started to give me results.

8/10

5th month

5th MONTH: I was content with the results. I continued to follow my regime. I was eating green vegetables, fresh fruits and was exercising regularly. I was very patiently and yet excitedly waiting for the six months to conclude.

9/10

6th month

6th MONTH: 60 per cent of my new hair growth was black in colour! I was happy with the results. I went to that salon owner and thanked her for this brilliant remedy. Now as it was the sixth month, I discontinued taking those capsules and instead I decided to continue eating right. I am still applying amla juice twice a month.

10/10

Verdict

VERDICT: Getting greys now is not only about getting old. Our lifestyle, pollution, adulterated foods and lack of nutrition play a great role in making our tresses dull and grey. Stay less stressed and eat the right food. Also, exercise regularly as it helps in blood circulation which is good for your skin and growth of your hair. And before you opt for any supplement, don’t forget to consult an expert.

I have got rid of grey hair with vitamins. I share my experiences and some pictures in my blog. You can find the blog with googlesearch "sannaetnainenglish". Nowadays, there is a lot of scientific research about greying hair and about how to prevent it. It is possible to get rid of grey hair with the right combination of vitamins and minerals. When you get older, the cell production becomes slower, and the ability to absorb nutritives will become less effective. This applies also to the hair. As a result of this malnutrition, the melanin production diminishes and the hair turns grey. It’s only logical.
